Planting & Care Guide
-
Position: Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Snow White' thrives in full sun to partial shade. It grows best in full sun, which enhances its white tips and overall colour. In warmer climates, it may benefit from some afternoon shade to protect the foliage from scorching, particularly during the hottest months.
-
Soil: This conifer prefers moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. It thrives in rich, organic soil, and although it can tolerate a variety of soil types, it does best when the soil is consistently moist yet well-drained. Avoid waterlogged soil to prevent root rot.
-
Watering: Water 'Snow White' regularly, especially during dry spells. It prefers consistently moist soil during its early years, but once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant. Ensure the soil is well-drained to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
-
Maintenance:
-
Pruning: 'Snow White' requires minimal pruning to maintain its natural pyramidal shape. However, you can lightly trim any dead or damaged branches throughout the year to keep it tidy. Avoid heavy pruning as it may alter the plant’s natural form.
-
Feeding: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. This will help the plant thrive and promote strong growth throughout the season.
-
Mulching: Add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Be sure to leave a gap around the base of the trunk to prevent the mulch from sitting directly against the stem.

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Snow White' can be paired with various plants to create a visually harmonious and dynamic garden. Its unique white-tipped foliage and compact shape make it a versatile addition to a wide range of garden styles.
