Ceratostigma ‘Forest Blue’ – A Hardy Perennial with Vivid Blue Flowers & Rich Autumn Foliage

Ceratostigma ‘Forest Blue’ is a compact, deciduous perennial prized for its brilliant blue flowers that bloom from late summer to autumn, bringing vibrant colour when many other plants fade. Its lush green foliage transforms into rich red and bronze hues in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Perfect for borders, rock gardens, and containers, this low-maintenance plant thrives in sunny, well-drained locations, making it a valuable addition to any garden.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring & Summer – Fresh green foliage forms a neat, bushy mound, preparing for late-season blooms.

  • Late Summer to Autumn – Clusters of intense gentian-blue flowers provide a striking contrast to the changing foliage.

  • Autumn – Leaves turn stunning shades of red and bronze, extending seasonal interest.

  • Winter – The plant dies back, returning vigorously in spring.

Structure & Form

  • Height & Spread – Grows to approximately 1m tall, with a similar width, forming a compact mound.

  • Flowers – Small but striking deep blue blooms, appearing from July to October.

  • Foliage – Green oval leaves turn fiery red in autumn, creating a stunning contrast.

  • Growth Habit – Low-growing, spreading, and drought-tolerant once established.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Borders & Rock Gardens – Adds late-season colour and texture.
  • Wildlife & Pollinator-Friendly Gardens – Attracts bees and butterflies.
  • Container Planting – Ideal for patios and compact spaces.
  • Coastal & Mediterranean-Style Gardens – Thrives in sunny, free-draining soils.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position – Prefers full sun, though tolerates partial shade.

  • Soil – Grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

  • Hardiness – Fully hardy in the UK; dies back in winter and regrows in spring.

  • Maintenance – Low-maintenance; cut back dead stems in early spring.

  • Drought Tolerance – Once established, it requires minimal watering.
