As winter begins to loosen its grip and the first signs of spring appear, February is the perfect time to prepare your garden for the growing season ahead. While the days may still be cold, there are plenty of tasks to get stuck into that will set you up for a flourishing spring. Here are our top 10 gardening hints and tips for February.
Get a head start on the growing season by sowing hardy annuals, tomatoes, chillies, and sweet peas indoors. A sunny windowsill or heated propagator will provide the perfect conditions for germination, ensuring strong and healthy seedlings are ready for planting out in the spring.
Now is the ideal time to prune apple and pear trees while they are still dormant. Remove any dead, diseased or crossing branches to encourage healthy growth and better fruit production. Autumn fruiting raspberries should also be cut back to ground level to promote strong new canes for the coming season.
Cut back dead foliage from perennials and remove weeds before they take hold. Clearing away debris not only tidies up your borders but also reduces the risk of pests and diseases overwintering in your garden.
Ensure any tender plants that have been overwintered in greenhouses or under fleece remain protected from cold snaps. Inspect stored tubers such as dahlias and begonias for signs of rot, discarding any that show signs of disease.
For those growing potatoes, February is the perfect time to start chitting. Place seed potatoes in a cool, bright place with their 'eyes' facing upwards to encourage strong shoots before planting them out in March or April.
Enrich your soil by spreading compost or well-rotted manure around trees, shrubs, and flower beds. This will help to improve soil structure, retain moisture, and give your plants a nutrient boost as they begin to wake up from their winter slumber.
Avoid walking on frosty or waterlogged grass as this can cause damage. If the weather is mild, you can begin raking away moss and aerating compacted areas to help improve drainage and promote healthy growth when spring arrives.
Now is a great time to plan your garden layout and order seeds, bulbs, and summer-flowering plants. A little forward planning will help you make the most of your space and ensure a vibrant, colourful display in the months ahead.
Garden wildlife can struggle in the winter months, so continue feeding the birds with high-energy food such as suet and sunflower seeds. Providing fresh water and leaving a small pile of leaves or logs can also offer shelter for insects and small mammals.
Before the busy gardening season begins, take the time to clean, sharpen, and repair your tools. Give your lawnmower a service, check your greenhouse for any damage, and make sure you have everything you need for a successful growing season.
By tackling these February gardening tasks, you'll be well-prepared for the vibrant months ahead. Spring is just around the corner, and with a little effort now, your garden will be bursting with life in no time.
