Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is a popular evergreen shrub known for its glossy, dark green leaves and dense growth. It is ideal for creating thick, privacy-providing hedges or as an attractive feature plant in the garden.

Cherry Laurel makes excellent hedges due to its rapid growth and dense foliage, offering effective screening. It is low maintenance and quickly forms a lush barrier with minimal effort.

Cherry Laurel Hedging - Cherry Laurel is a robust shrub with broad, glossy leaves that create a dense, evergreen screen. It’s perfect for tall, lush hedges that provide privacy and protection.

Cherry Laurel thrives in moist, well-drained soil and can be planted in both full sun and partial shade. We always cut back by a third as well to help them get away. If you plant them in wet slop then kiss your money goodbye, they like free draining soil while they are getting established They grow easily in all soils except waterlogged. Feed well to maintain that lush colour.

Guide to Planting Field-Grown Root Balled Plants

Pros:

  1. Established Roots: Typically stronger, established roots ensure better initial growth.
  2. Immediate Impact: Larger plants provide instant structure and aesthetics.

Cons:

  1. Heavy and Bulky: Can be difficult to transport and plant due to size and weight.
  2. Seasonal Availability: Generally available only in the dormant season (autumn to early spring).

Preparation for Planting:

  1. Unwrap Carefully: Remove any packaging material, but leave the burlap or wire basket on.
  2. Keep plants moist: Plants should be kept moist until the time of planting.

Planting Process:

  1. Dig a Hole: Make a hole twice the width of the root ball and the same depth.
  2. Position Plant: Place the root ball in the hole, ensuring the top is level with the ground surface.
  3. Do Not Remove Root Sack: Leave the burlap or wire basket around the root ball. It is bio degradable and will rot away naturally.
  4. Backfill: Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the roots to eliminate air pockets.
  5. Water: Water deeply after planting to settle the soil and avoid wilting.

Possibility of Losses:

  • Initial Shock: Some plants may suffer transplant shock, leading to potential losses.
  • Mitigation: Proper care and consistent watering during the establishment phase can minimise this risk.

Main Causes of Failure:

  1. Improper Planting Depth: Planting too deep or too shallow can stress the roots.
  2. Poor Soil Conditions: Compacted or poorly drained soil can hinder root growth.
  3. Insufficient Watering: Both under-watering and over-watering can lead to plant stress and failure. Strong wind can dry leafy pants.
  4. Pest and Disease: Lack of protection and monitoring can result in damage from pests and diseases.

Tips for Success:

  1. Stake Larger Plants: Support with stakes to prevent wind damage.
  2. Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
  3. Regular Monitoring: Check for signs of stress, pests, and disease, and address them promptly.

By following these guidelines and providing consistent aftercare, you can successfully plant and establish field-grown root balled plants in your garden.

Cherry Laurel, or Prunus laurocerasus, is an evergreen hedge known for its dense, glossy dark green foliage. With its rapid growth, lush coverage, and low maintenance needs, Cherry Laurel is an excellent choice for a year-round hedge that enhances any garden.

Where Should I Site My Cherry Laurel Hedging?

Spring and autumn are the ideal times for planting, but pot-grown laurels can be planted year-round. Consider investing in a leaky hose to ease watering during hot weather. When planting, dig a hole that is deep and wide enough for the root ball, ensuring the root collar (where the trunk meets the roots) stays above the soil level. Once the plant is positioned, fill the hole with soil and gently tamp it down to remove any air pockets.

Cherry Laurels are adaptable to various conditions, thriving in full sun or partial shade and different soil types, making them suitable for many garden settings.

Watering

Thoroughly water the plant to settle the soil and ensure the roots receive adequate moisture. Applying a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base will help regulate soil temperature and promote healthy growth.

Although Cherry Laurels are hardy, they require regular watering during their first few years, especially during dry periods. Water once a week and avoid wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.

Growth & Pruning

Cherry Laurels can grow up to 60 cm per year, making them a fast-growing option for a privacy hedge. Due to their rapid growth, they may need trimming several times a year. Trim back to maintain the desired shape and size using sharp, clean shears. Avoid removing more than one-third of the plant's growth each year to ensure healthy development.

Characteristics:

  • Glossy, dense green foliage
  • Green stems on new growth and woody stems on older growth
  • White flowers in spring or early summer
  • Red or black inedible berries in autumn or winter
  • Almond scent when foliage is crushed
  • Grows up to 60 cm per year
  • Winter hardy
  • Root Ball (pre-order for October)
