Azalea obt. Little Red

Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’ – A Dazzling, Compact Beauty with Vibrant Red Blooms

Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’, commonly known as Dwarf Red Azalea, is a stunning, compact shrub that brings bold, fiery red blossoms to the garden in spring. This variety of Azalea is prized for its rich, vibrant flowers and its neat, low-growing habit, making it an ideal choice for smaller spaces or container gardens. ‘Little Red’ produces an abundance of tubular red flowers that stand out beautifully against its glossy, dark green foliage. With a rounded form and dense growth, this Azalea is perfect for adding vibrant colour to borders, rock gardens, or as a striking accent plant in any landscape.

Why Grow Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’?

Vibrant Red Blooms – The deep red flowers of Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’ provide an eye-catching display in early to mid-spring, injecting energy and colour into the garden when many other plants are just beginning to awaken.

Compact & Neat Habit – With a height of only 60cm, this variety is perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or as a low-growing hedge, making it a versatile choice for gardeners looking for a manageable, striking plant.

Evergreen Foliage – The dark green, glossy leaves provide a year-round backdrop to the brilliant red blooms, adding to the plant's beauty even after flowering.

Pollinator-Friendly – The vibrant blooms attract a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, enhancing the wildlife value of your garden.

Hardy & Low-Maintenance – Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’ is a hardy shrub that thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and requires minimal care once established, making it a great choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Prefers partial shade, especially in warmer climates, though it can tolerate full sun in cooler areas. It thrives in sheltered spots with protection from strong winds, which can damage its delicate blooms.

Soil: Best in well-drained, acidic soil, rich in organic matter. Azaleas prefer a slightly acidic environment and benefit from consistent moisture.

Watering: Water regularly when newly planted, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy. Once established, Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’ is relatively drought-tolerant, though it will appreciate supplemental watering during dry spells.

Maintenance:

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a tidy appearance and promote additional blooms.
  • Prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and remove any damaged or dead wood.
  • Mulch around the base to maintain soil moisture and protect the roots during colder months.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Azalea obtusum ‘Little Red’ pairs beautifully with other spring-blooming shrubs like Rhododendrons, Camellias, or Pieris, where the rich red flowers contrast against softer hues like pink or white. It also looks stunning alongside evergreen plants such as ferns or hostas, which provide a lush, green backdrop that makes the red blooms pop even more. For a striking border, combine with low-growing perennials like Heuchera or Dianthus, which add texture and colour contrast to this radiant Azalea.
