Camellia japonica 'Ill Tramonto' – A Gorgeous Evergreen Shrub with Fiery Orange-Red Blooms

Camellia japonica 'Ill Tramonto' is a striking evergreen shrub known for its vibrant, fiery orange-red flowers and glossy dark green foliage. The semi-double blooms, with their radiant shades of orange and red, create a stunning visual display in the garden, especially in late winter and early spring when many plants are still dormant. This Camellia variety brings bold color and elegance to any landscape, making it a perfect addition to gardens of all sizes, including containers, borders, and shaded corners.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: 'Ill Tramonto' begins to bloom in late winter to early spring, showcasing its dazzling orange-red flowers with semi-double petals that gradually open to reveal a beautiful, layered bloom.
  • Summer: The plant’s glossy evergreen leaves provide a rich, dark green backdrop, maintaining a tidy, attractive appearance throughout the warmer months.
  • Autumn: The foliage remains vibrant, adding texture and structure to the garden as the season changes.
  • Winter: This Camellia shines through the colder months, offering stunning color with its radiant blooms, brightening up shaded and dreary garden spaces.

Structure & Form
Camellia japonica 'Ill Tramonto' reaches a height of 90–120cm and a spread of 75–90cm, with a dense, rounded shape. Its vibrant orange-red flowers provide a bold contrast against the deep green foliage, adding visual interest and drama to any landscape. Its compact form makes it ideal for smaller gardens, containers, or as part of larger mixed borders, while its evergreen nature ensures year-round interest and beauty.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Formal Gardens: The fiery blooms and elegant form of 'Ill Tramonto' make it an excellent choice for structured and formal garden designs, where symmetry and color contrast are key.
  • Foundation Plantings: This Camellia is perfect for planting near the foundation of homes or structures, offering a burst of color in early spring and attractive evergreen foliage throughout the year.
  • Mixed Borders: The vibrant blooms stand out beautifully in mixed borders, particularly when paired with early-blooming perennials and flowering shrubs.
  • Container Planting: Due to its compact size, 'Ill Tramonto' is ideal for container gardens, bringing color and structure to patios, balconies, and terraces.
  • Wildlife Gardens: While not heavily fragrant, the Camellia provides shelter for small birds and wildlife, particularly in winter, when it adds valuable structure to the garden.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Prefers partial shade to full sun, with some protection from the harsh afternoon sun. It thrives in morning sun and afternoon shade, which helps protect its blooms from scorching.
  • Soil: Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained, fertile soil. It can tolerate a variety of soil types, but drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Hardiness: Hardy, making it suitable for temperate climates. Light frosts are generally tolerated, but extreme cold may require protection.
  • Maintenance: Camellia 'Ill Tramonto' is relatively low-maintenance. Prune lightly after blooming to shape the plant or remove any dead or damaged growth. Mulching around the base in late fall helps protect the roots from freezing in colder climates.

Why Choose Camellia japonica 'Ill Tramonto'?
With its stunning orange-red flowers, glossy evergreen leaves, and compact size, Camellia 'Ill Tramonto' adds dramatic color and elegance to any garden.
