Prunus laurocerasus (Cherry Laurel) – A Dense, Evergreen Shrub with Glossy Green Foliage
Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as Cherry Laurel, is a versatile and hardy evergreen shrub that adds year-round interest and structure to the garden. Known for its dense, dark green foliage and rapid growth, Cherry Laurel is perfect for creating privacy screens, hedges, or adding a lush backdrop to garden beds. Its glossy leaves and white spring flowers make it a standout in both formal and informal landscapes. This low-maintenance shrub is ideal for those looking to quickly create dense, green coverage with minimal effort.
Why Grow Prunus laurocerasus (Cherry Laurel)?
Evergreen Foliage – Cherry Laurel keeps its glossy, dark green leaves year-round, providing consistent colour and texture to the garden, even in winter.
Fast-Growing & Dense – This shrub grows quickly and forms a dense, bushy habit, making it perfect for creating privacy screens or hedges. Its dense growth provides excellent coverage for unwanted views or as a windbreak.
Low-Maintenance – Cherry Laurel is very easy to grow and requires minimal care. It is pest- and disease-resistant and can thrive in a variety of conditions, making it a great option for low-maintenance gardeners.
Spring Flowers – In spring, Cherry Laurel produces small, fragrant white flowers in spikes, which add a touch of interest and attract pollinators like bees.
Planting & Care Guide
Position – Cherry Laurel is highly adaptable and can grow in full sun to partial shade. It thrives in shaded or semi-shaded areas but will also tolerate sun, although it may require extra watering in full sun conditions.
Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, chalk, or sand. It does best in slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions.
Watering – Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Cherry Laurel is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during dry spells.
Maintenance:
- Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain the desired shape and size. Cherry Laurel responds well to pruning and can be shaped into formal hedges or left to grow more naturally.
- Remove any dead or damaged leaves to keep the shrub looking tidy.
- Mulch in spring to retain moisture and keep the roots cool.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Prunus laurocerasus pairs beautifully with other evergreen plants, such as Boxwood, Yew, or Holly, for a structured, year-round garden. It also works well as a backdrop for flowering shrubs like Hydrangea or Rhododendron, whose blooms contrast beautifully with its glossy foliage. For a more natural look, combine with ferns, hostas, or grasses like Hakonechloa for a lush, woodland-inspired garden. The white spring flowers can complement other early bloomers, such as Forsythia or Corylus.
Does the height include the pot?
No, we measure from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant except for some of the instant planted screens, in this case it will be stated in the description
