Weigela florida 'Alexandra' – A Striking Shrub with Vibrant Flowers and Year-Round Appeal

Weigela florida 'Alexandra', commonly known as Alexandra Weigela, is a deciduous shrub renowned for its bold, colorful blossoms and its graceful form. This variety is especially prized for its stunning deep pink, funnel-shaped flowers that bloom abundantly from late spring to early summer, adding a vibrant pop of color to gardens. With its compact growth habit and rich foliage, Alexandra is perfect for smaller gardens, borders, or as a colorful accent in larger landscapes. Whether planted as a specimen shrub or in groups, Weigela 'Alexandra' provides long-lasting beauty and seasonal interest, making it a must-have for any garden.

Why Grow Weigela florida 'Alexandra'?

Striking Pink Flowers – The most prominent feature of Weigela 'Alexandra' is its profusion of deep pink, trumpet-shaped flowers that cover the shrub in late spring and early summer. These bold blossoms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, while their vibrant color adds a cheerful burst to the garden. The flowers are particularly striking against the backdrop of the shrub’s dark green foliage.

Compact Growth HabitAlexandra grows to a manageable height of 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6 feet) and a similar spread, making it an excellent choice for smaller spaces or as a colorful hedge or border plant. Its compact form also allows it to be used in mixed plantings, containers, or as part of a larger landscape design.

Rich Green Foliage – The dark green leaves of Weigela 'Alexandra' provide a lush backdrop for the vibrant flowers, maintaining their appeal even after the blooms have faded. The leaves have a slight sheen, adding texture to the plant, and they turn a lovely yellow-green hue in the fall, extending the plant's seasonal interest.

Low MaintenanceWeigela 'Alexandra' is easy to care for, requiring minimal attention once established. It is hardy, adaptable to various soil types, and drought-tolerant once mature. The shrub is also relatively pest- and disease-resistant, making it an excellent choice for gardeners who want a beautiful plant with minimal fuss.

Height and Spread of Weigela florida 'Alexandra'

Weigela 'Alexandra' typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6 feet) and spreads to around 1.5 meters (5 feet). This compact size makes it suitable for small gardens, as well as for planting in mixed borders or as a colorful hedge. It is also a great option for container gardening, where it will thrive and produce vibrant flowers.

Where to Site Your Weigela florida 'Alexandra'

This versatile shrub thrives in a range of conditions, but it performs best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Here are some great planting options:

  • Borders and Edges: Weigela 'Alexandra' makes an excellent choice for planting along garden borders, where its vibrant flowers can be showcased. It pairs beautifully with other shrubs, perennials, or ornamental grasses to create a colorful, layered effect.
  • Hedges and Screens: Plant this shrub in rows to create a low-maintenance, colorful hedge. The compact size and abundant flowers make it perfect for creating privacy or defining garden spaces.
  • Specimen Plant: As a specimen shrub, Weigela 'Alexandra' stands out as an eye-catching focal point in the garden. Its vibrant blossoms and attractive foliage make it a striking addition to any landscape.
  • Containers: Due to its manageable size, this shrub is an ideal candidate for container planting. Place it on patios, decks, or balconies to add a burst of color to your outdoor space.

How to Grow and Care for Your Weigela florida 'Alexandra'

SoilWeigela 'Alexandra' is adaptable to a variety of well-drained soils, including loam, clay, and sandy soils. It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soil but can tolerate a range of pH levels. Be sure to plant in well-drained soil to prevent waterlogged roots.

LightWeigela 'Alexandra' performs best in full sun, where it will produce the most abundant flowers and vibrant color. It can tolerate partial shade, though flowering may be less prolific in low-light conditions.

Watering – While Weigela 'Alexandra' is drought-tolerant once established, it will perform best with regular watering, especially during dry spells. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. During periods of heavy rain or prolonged wet conditions, ensure that the shrub is not sitting in waterlogged soil.

Maintenance:

Pruning – Light pruning is recommended after the first bloom to remove spent flowers and maintain the shrub’s shape. In late winter or early spring, you can perform a more thorough pruning to remove any dead or damaged wood and encourage fresh growth. Avoid cutting back too heavily, as Weigela 'Alexandra' flowers on old wood, and excessive pruning could reduce the next year’s blooms.

Mulching – Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations. Mulch is especially helpful in winter to keep the roots insulated from the cold.

Pest & Disease ResistanceWeigela 'Alexandra' is generally resistant to common pests and diseases, such as aphids and powdery mildew. However, it is always good practice to monitor the plant regularly for signs of any issues. Good air circulation around the shrub can help prevent disease problems.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Weigela florida 'Alexandra' pairs beautifully with a variety of other plants, enhancing the beauty of your garden through the seasons:

  • Perennials: Combine Weigela 'Alexandra' with early-blooming perennials like Phlox, Shasta daisies, or Salvia for a harmonious color palette that lasts throughout the growing season.
  • Other Shrubs: This shrub looks wonderful when planted alongside other flowering shrubs like Spiraea, Forsythia, or Abelia. The combination of flower shapes and colors adds depth to your garden.
  • Ornamental Grasses: Add texture to your garden by planting Weigela 'Alexandra' with ornamental grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum, which provide movement and contrast to the shrub’s compact form.
  • Evergreens: To create year-round interest, plant Weigela 'Alexandra' near evergreen shrubs such as Boxwood or Yew, which offer a lush green backdrop that will make the shrub’s flowers pop in the spring.

Conclusion

Weigela florida 'Alexandra' is a vibrant, compact shrub that brings beauty, color, and texture to any garden. Its striking pink flowers, rich green foliage, and low-maintenance nature make it a standout choice for a variety of landscapes. Whether used as a specimen shrub, part of a hedge, or combined with other flowering plants, Weigela 'Alexandra' offers year-round appeal. With its cheerful blossoms and graceful form, it is the perfect addition to small gardens, borders, and container plantings.
