Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’ – A Soft and Sunny Twist on the Classic Shasta Daisy
Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’, also known as the “Banana Cream Shasta Daisy,” brings a refreshing, cheerful pop of color to your garden with its unique creamy-yellow blooms. Unlike traditional white daisies, this variety features flowers with soft, buttery yellow petals that gradually fade to white as they mature, creating a warm, sunny effect that contrasts beautifully with its dark green foliage. This hardy perennial is perfect for borders, cottage gardens, or as a cut flower, and its long-lasting blooms attract pollinators while adding a soft, sophisticated charm to any planting scheme.
Why Grow Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’?
- Unique, Two-Toned Blooms – The soft yellow petals with a white center create a creamy, inviting look that adds warmth and depth to garden beds.
- Long Blooming Period – ‘Banana Cream’ blooms from late spring to early fall, offering months of color and attracting bees and butterflies throughout the season.
- Versatile Garden Addition – This cultivar is ideal for borders, container gardens, or mixed perennial beds, and its long-lasting flowers make excellent cut flowers.
- Pollinator-Friendly – The bright, nectar-rich blooms attract a variety of pollinators, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
- Low Maintenance – Once established, ‘Banana Cream’ is easy to care for, requiring minimal maintenance and reliably returning year after year.
Where to Site Your Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’
Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’ thrives in full sun, where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Plant it in flower borders, cottage gardens, or mixed perennial beds, where its cheerful blooms can stand out against other plants. It also performs well in containers, adding a touch of summer brightness to patios or decks.
How to Grow and Care for Your Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’
- Soil – Prefers well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. It can tolerate a range of soil types as long as drainage is good.
- Light – Grows best in full sun, although it will tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates.
- Watering – Water regularly, particularly during dry periods, but avoid over-watering as this can cause the roots to rot. Once established, ‘Banana Cream’ is somewhat drought-tolerant.
Maintenance:
- Mulch & Feed – Apply a layer of mulch around the base in spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly in early spring with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms.
- Deadheading & Cleanup – Regularly deadhead spent flowers to promote further blooming and to keep the plant looking tidy. Cutting back the plant after the first flush of flowers will also encourage a second bloom later in the season.
- Division – Divide the plant every 2-3 years to maintain vigor and avoid overcrowding. This is best done in early spring or fall, when the plant is not in bloom.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Leucanthemum ‘Banana Cream’ pairs wonderfully with other sun-loving perennials such as Echinacea, Salvia, and Lavender, where its creamy blooms offer a gentle contrast to the bolder colors of purple, red, or pink. It works well in a traditional cottage garden setting alongside plants like Geranium, Penstemon, or Achillea, adding a soft, sunny focal point to the mix. For a wildflower look, combine with Coreopsis or Rudbeckia for a lively, colorful display. Its light color also makes it a great companion to dark-leaved plants like Heuchera or ornamental grasses, where it can shine in contrast to the darker hues. For a cut flower garden, ‘Banana Cream’ is a perfect addition to create beautiful, long-lasting bouquets with a soft, summery feel.
