Forsythia intermedia Week End is a vibrant and fast-growing deciduous shrub known for its profusion of bright yellow flowers that bloom in early spring. This variety of Forsythia is popular in UK gardens for its early-season color and ease of cultivation. Pair it with other early spring bloomers like daffodils or hellebores for a coordinated seasonal display. It also works well as a standalone specimen plant, adding color and interest to lawns, mixed borders, or garden beds.

They are grown for their:

  • Leaves: The leaves are lance-shaped and bright green, typically growing to about 5-10 cm in length. The foliage appears after the flowers fade, forming a dense, bushy backdrop for the rest of the growing season. Leaves usually turn a mild yellow-green before dropping in autumn
  • Bloom Time: One of the earliest bloomers, Forsythia 'Week End' flowers in early to mid-spring (March-April in the UK), sometimes while snow is still on the ground. The flowers are bright yellow, star-shaped, covering the bare branches from top to bottom before the leaves appear. The intense yellow color creates a striking visual effect.
  • This variety typically grows to about 2-2.5 meters

Forsythia thrives in a variety of soil types but performs best in well-drained soil. It can tolerate both clay and sandy soils as long as they are not waterlogged. For the best flowering display, plant Forsythia 'Week End' in full sun. It can tolerate partial shade, but fewer flowers will develop in shadier conditions. Prune immediately after flowering, as the plant flowers on old wood (branches formed during the previous year). This ensures you don’t remove the buds that will bloom the following spring.
