Cornus controversa, commonly known as the Wedding Cake Tree is a stunning and unique tree that adds beauty, wildlife value, and shade to gardens in the UK. With its striking layered branching, attractive flowers, and vibrant autumn colors, it makes a valuable addition to various landscapes. By providing the right growing conditions and care, gardeners can enjoy the many rewards this exceptional tree has to offer.

Here’s a detailed overview of this ornamental tree:

  • Leaves: The tree features ovate, dark green leaves that are 7-12 cm long, with a glossy texture. The leaves turn a vibrant yellow to red in the autumn, providing seasonal interest. The leaves are arranged oppositely, creating a layered appearance that adds to the tree's unique silhouette.
  • Flower Structure: In late spring (May to June), Cornus controversa produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that appear in flat, umbrella-like cymes. These flowers attract pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. The tree typically flowers in May to June, adding to its ornamental value.
  • Berries: After flowering, the tree produces small, blue-black berries that are about 1 cm (0.4 inches) in diameter. While the fruit is not typically consumed by humans, it can attract birds and other wildlife.
  • Height and Spread: Cornus controversa can reach a height of 8-12 meters and has a spread of 4-8 meters

Cornus controversa prefers moist, well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. The tree prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, the best flowering and growth occur in full sun. Minimal pruning is required, but it can be done to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. The best time for pruning is in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring can promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilization, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
