Clerodendrum Trichotomum Fargesii

Clerodendrum trichotomum ‘Fargesii’ – A Striking Shrub with Fragrant Flowers and Colorful Foliage

Clerodendrum trichotomum ‘Fargesii’, commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower, is an elegant deciduous shrub that adds dramatic beauty and fragrance to any garden. With its large, glossy green leaves and unique, star-shaped white flowers, this variety creates an eye-catching display from late summer to early autumn. The flowers are followed by attractive blue or purple fruits that contrast beautifully with the foliage. Reaching a height of 4-8m, Clerodendrum ‘Fargesii’ is ideal for adding height and structure to mixed borders, woodland gardens, or shrub beds. Its easy-to-grow nature and stunning visual appeal make it a favorite among gardeners looking for a striking, low-maintenance shrub.

Why Grow Clerodendrum trichotomum ‘Fargesii’?

Fragrant White Flowers – The star-shaped, white flowers of Clerodendrum ‘Fargesii’ are not only visually striking but also highly fragrant, filling the garden with a pleasant, sweet scent from late summer into autumn. These blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding life to your garden.

Colorful Fruits – After blooming, the plant produces distinctive blue or purple berries that add a pop of color and interest as the season progresses. These fruits persist well into the fall, creating visual appeal long after the flowers have faded.

Attractive Foliage – The large, deep green leaves of Clerodendrum ‘Fargesii’ provide a rich backdrop to the flowers and fruits. As the plant matures, the foliage can also develop a slightly reddish tint, adding to the plant’s seasonal beauty.

Compact Size & Easy to Grow – Growing to a manageable height of 4-8m, this variety of Clerodendrum is perfect for smaller gardens or as a specimen shrub. Its hardy and adaptable nature makes it easy to grow in a variety of soil types and conditions, requiring minimal maintenance once established.

Hardy & Low Maintenance – Clerodendrum trichotomum ‘Fargesii’ is a hardy shrub that thrives in a range of growing conditions. It is relatively low-maintenance, making it a great choice for gardeners who want an attractive, fragrant shrub without the need for constant care.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Clerodendrum ‘Fargesii’ thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate some shade, it will produce the most abundant flowers and fruit when planted in a sunny location. In hot climates, some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from excessive heat.

Soil: This shrub is adaptable to a variety of soils, including well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It prefers rich, moist soil but can tolerate average garden conditions. Ensure that the soil drains well to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Watering: Water regularly, particularly during dry spells or when the plant is newly established. Once established, Clerodendrum ‘Fargesii’ is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from consistent moisture during the growing season. Be sure not to overwater, as excessive moisture can lead to root issues.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms. While it is not a heavy feeder, a yearly application of organic matter or compost around the base of the plant can help improve soil fertility and encourage lush growth.

Pruning & Maintenance: Clerodendrum trichotomum ‘Fargesii’ benefits from light pruning to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. It can be pruned in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cutting back the plant in early spring will encourage more vigorous growth and ensure a tidy appearance.

Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, keep the soil cool, and suppress weeds. A 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or bark, will help improve soil conditions and provide extra nutrients as it decomposes. Keep mulch away from the plant’s crown to prevent rot.

Protection from Pests and Diseases: Clerodendrum ‘Fargesii’ is relatively pest-resistant, but it can occasionally suffer from aphids or fungal infections. Treat any pest problems with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid overhead watering to minimize the risk of fungal diseases.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Clerodendrum trichotomum ‘Fargesii’ pairs beautifully with other summer-blooming shrubs and plants. Combine it with flowering perennials such as coneflowers (Echinacea), black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia), or asters for a striking contrast in colors and textures. The vibrant berries of ‘Fargesii’ complement the foliage of evergreen shrubs like boxwood or holly, creating visual interest even in winter. It also works well in woodland gardens, where its height and structure provide a bold focal point among lower-growing ferns, hostas, or spring bulbs.

For a more formal look, combine it with other shrubs like Hydrangea or Rose of Sharon, where its upright form contrasts nicely with the softer, rounded growth of other plants. Additionally, it makes a stunning addition to mixed borders or as a specimen plant that draws attention with its striking flowers and colorful fruits.
