Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' – Stunning Shade-Loving Perennial with Silver Foliage and Blue Flowers

Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' is an exquisite perennial known for its striking silvery-green foliage and vibrant blue flowers. With its heart-shaped leaves and eye-catching blooms, it makes a beautiful addition to shaded gardens, woodland areas, and mixed borders. This plant offers an elegant solution for groundcover and is perfect for those looking to brighten up shady spots with low-maintenance greenery and seasonal interest.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: Delicate clusters of blue, forget-me-not-like flowers emerge in early spring, creating a striking contrast against the silvery foliage.
  • Summer: The leaves retain their striking silvery appearance, transitioning to a darker green hue as the season progresses, offering texture and interest in shaded areas.
  • Autumn: Foliage may start to fade, but it still holds its shape and adds a nice texture to the garden as the weather cools.
  • Winter: As a deciduous perennial, 'Jack Frost' dies back in winter, leaving a tidy space until spring when the new growth begins.

Structure & Form

  • Height & Spread: Grows to a height of about 0.1 - 0.5m, with a spread of 0.5 - 1m, making it an ideal groundcover or edging plant.
  • Foliage: Features stunning heart-shaped leaves that are silvery-grey with dark green veins, giving it a bright and unique appearance.
  • Flowers: In early spring, bright blue flowers resembling forget-me-nots appear in clusters, offering a charming splash of colour.
  • Form: Dense, spreading habit that fills in garden spaces and works beautifully in combination with other shade-loving plants.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Woodland & Shade Gardens: Thrives in shade or partial shade, making it ideal for woodland settings or shaded garden areas.
  • Groundcover: Ideal for creating a lush, silvery-green carpet beneath trees, shrubs, or in flower beds, adding texture and depth.
  • Mixed Borders & Edging: Perfect for planting along the edge of flower beds or paths, offering a bright, attractive border with low-maintenance appeal.
  • Naturalistic Gardens: Adds a soft, natural element to informal, wildlife-friendly gardens, providing year-round coverage and seasonal blooms.
  • Container Planting: Excellent for growing in containers or patio pots, where its compact size and attractive foliage make it perfect for small spaces.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Prefers partial to full shade, making it perfect for under trees, along shaded garden borders, or in woodland settings. Can tolerate some morning sun.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It performs best in slightly acidic to neutral pH soils.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, this plant is ideal for cooler climates and can tolerate frost, making it an excellent choice for gardens in temperate regions.
  • Maintenance: Very low-maintenance – simply remove spent flowers in late spring and clean up any dead foliage in the fall. No heavy pruning required.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially in summer months, as this plant prefers a damp environment.
  • Feeding: A light feed with organic compost in the spring can promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage.
