Prunus Lusitanica, also known as Portuguese Laurel, is an elegant evergreen hedging plant. Renowned for its dense structure and beautiful appearance, it is a favourite among gardeners and landscapers worldwide.
Our 30/40cm Bare Root Portuguese Laurel Hedging allows you to grow your hedge from a smaller plant. Plant 2 or 3 per metre and within a year or so you will have a lovely bushy hedge. The Bare Root option will allow your hedge to become established quicker than potted or root ball plants.
Where should I site my Portuguese Laurel Hedging?
Portuguese Laurel Hedging flourishes in moist, well-drained soils and due to their hardy nature, they can even live in poor, shallow, slightly chalky conditions but this isn’t advised. Prunus Lusitanica is highly adaptable, enduring warm or cold exposed sites and also partial shade. For optimal health, prune and fertilise to maintain desired height, shape and condition.
Growth & Pruning
Portuguese Laurel Hedging can reach heights of up to 8 meters, with an annual growth rate of 30-60cm (about 1.64 ft). This variety grows at a
moderate rate, making it easy to prune and maintain without worrying about it becoming unruly.
The Portuguese Laurel Hedging reacts well to being pruned and can be trimmed into a variety of shapes and sizes. This should be done around twice a year depending on the size you want your hedge.
To ensure your Portuguese Laurel Hedging remains healthy and vibrant, it is advisable to remove berries and flowers. This helps the plant focus its energy on producing lush, green leaves rather than decorative
berries and flowers. But this is completely your choice!
