Cherry Laurel, also known as Prunus laurocerasus, is an evergreen hedge admired for its dense, glossy dark green foliage. Its rapid growth, lush coverage, and minimal maintenance make it an excellent choice for a year-round hedge that enhances any garden.
Where Should I Site My Cherry Laurel Hedging?
Spring and autumn are ideal times for planting, although pot-grown laurels can be planted year-round. To ease the watering process during hot weather, consider investing in a leaky hose. When planting, dig a hole that is both deep and wide enough for the root ball, ensuring the root collar (where the trunk meets the roots) remains above soil level. After positioning the plant, fill the hole with soil and gently tamp it down to eliminate air pockets.
Cherry Laurels are versatile and can thrive in full sun, partial shade, and various soil types, making them suitable for a range of garden settings.
Watering
Water the plant thoroughly to help settle the soil and ensure the roots receive adequate moisture. Applying a 2–3-inch layer of mulch around the base will help regulate soil temperature and promote healthy growth. Although Cherry Laurels are hardy, regular watering is crucial during their first few years, especially during dry spells. Water once a week, avoiding contact with the foliage to prevent fungal diseases.
Growth & Pruning
Cherry Laurels can grow up to 60 cm per year, making them a fast-growing option for quickly establishing a privacy hedge. Due to their vigorous growth, they may require trimming several times a year. Trim to maintain the desired shape and size using sharp, clean shears, and avoid removing more than one-third of the plant's growth each year to ensure healthy development.
