Catalpa Bignionoides Aurea or Golden Indian bean tree is an attractive and versatile tree that brings beauty, shade, and ecological benefits to gardens in the UK. With its stunning golden foliage, showy flowers, and ability to attract wildlife, it makes a valuable addition to various landscapes. By providing the right growing conditions and care, gardeners can enjoy the many rewards this unique tree has to offer.

Grown For:

  • Color: The most notable feature of the Golden Catalpa is its vibrant, bright yellow to golden, heart shaped leaves that emerge in spring. As summer progresses, the foliage may turn a slightly greener shade but will still retain its golden hue.
  • In late spring to early summer, Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea' produces clusters of large, white flowers with purple and yellow markings. These fragrant flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators. The flowering period typically occurs in June and lasts several weeks.
  • After flowering, the tree produces long, cylindrical seed pods that can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length. These pods contain flat seeds and can persist on the tree into winter, adding visual interest.
  • Height and Spread: Golden Catalpa can grow to a height of 8-12 meters

Catalpa bignonioides 'Aurea' prefers well-drained soils but can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. The tree can grow in slightly acidic to alkaline soils, making it versatile for various garden conditions. This tree thrives best in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. This sunlight encourages vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Pruning is generally not required, but occasional trimming can help maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. The best time for pruning is late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
