Michaelmas Daisy

Aster dumosus ‘Professor Anton De Kippenberg’ – A Late-Season Burst of Vivid Violet-Blue

Aster dumosus ‘Professor Anton De Kippenberg’ is a compact, free-flowering Michaelmas daisy that brings an explosion of colour to the autumn garden. Its abundant violet-blue, daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centres provide a striking contrast against deep green foliage. Blooming profusely from late summer into autumn, this hardy perennial is an essential source of nectar for bees and butterflies. With its neat, bushy habit and mildew-resistant foliage, ‘Professor Anton De Kippenberg’ is a reliable, low-maintenance choice for borders, containers, and pollinator-friendly plantings.

Why Grow Aster dumosus ‘Professor Anton De Kippenberg’?

Rich Violet-Blue Blooms – A vibrant display of daisy-like flowers that add a splash of late-season colour.

Pollinator-Friendly – A valuable nectar source for bees and butterflies, supporting wildlife into autumn.

Compact & Tidy Growth – Forms a dense, bushy mound, making it perfect for edging, small spaces, and patio containers.

Long-Lasting Flowers – Blooms from late summer through autumn, providing continuous colour as other plants fade.

Hardy & Disease-Resistant – Fully hardy in the UK with excellent resistance to mildew, ensuring healthy, lush foliage.

Planting & Care Guide

Position – Thrives in full sun but will tolerate light shade. Ideal for borders, rock gardens, and containers.

Soil – Prefers moist, well-drained soil, though it adapts well to most garden conditions.

Watering – Water regularly when newly planted; once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.

Maintenance:

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming.
  • Cut back in late autumn after flowering to maintain a compact shape.
  • Divide clumps every few years to promote vigorous growth and prevent overcrowding.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Aster ‘Professor Anton De Kippenberg’ pairs beautifully with other late-season stars like Rudbeckia, Sedum, and Echinacea, creating a vibrant autumnal display. It also works well alongside ornamental grasses such as Panicum and Stipa, adding movement and texture. For a traditional cottage garden feel, combine with Salvia, Nepeta, and Verbena bonariensis
