Alnus Incana

Grey Alder

Alnus incana Multi-Stem – The Hardy & Versatile Grey Alder

Alnus incana, commonly known as Grey Alder, is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed deciduous tree valued for its elegant form, silver-grey bark, and resilience in challenging conditions. With its light, open canopy and ability to thrive in poor, wet, or compacted soils, this adaptable species is ideal for naturalistic planting, erosion control, and biodiversity-focused landscapes.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: Fresh, soft green leaves emerge alongside yellow male catkins and discreet female flowers, attracting pollinators.
  • Summer: Lush, silvery-green foliage provides light shade while maintaining an airy, graceful structure.
  • Autumn: Leaves turn pale yellow, adding seasonal interest before falling to reveal the tree’s attractive bark.
  • Winter: The smooth grey bark and persistent woody cone-like seed clusters offer structural beauty and wildlife benefits.

Structure & Form

Alnus incana Multi-Stem develops into a large, bushy tree or shrub, reaching 8–15m in height with a spreading, open habit. The multiple stems emerge from the base, creating a naturalistic and sculptural effect, ideal for softening landscapes, stabilizing slopes, and enriching wildlife habitats.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Wetlands & Riverbanks – Thrives in damp, flood-prone soils, preventing erosion.
  • Wildlife & Biodiversity Gardens – Supports pollinators, birds, and soil health.
  • Naturalistic & Woodland Planting – Blends seamlessly into wilder landscapes.
  • Urban & Industrial Landscapes – Tolerant of pollution, poor soils, and exposed conditions.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Tolerant of poor, sandy, or clay soils; prefers moist or wet conditions.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy, resistant to frost, wind, and flooding.
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning required; coppicing can encourage denser growth.

Why Choose Alnus incana Multi-Stem?

With its fast growth, resilience, and ability to thrive in difficult conditions, Alnus incana Multi-Stem is a low-maintenance, high-impact tree for natural landscapes, ecological restoration, and soil stabilisation projects.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • Other Native Trees – Pair with Betula pendula (Silver Birch) or Salix alba (White Willow) for a biodiverse woodland feel.
  • Flowering Shrubs – Complement with Cornus sanguinea (Dogwood) or Sambucus nigra (Elder) for seasonal colour.
  • Wetland & Meadow Plants – Underplant with Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris) or Filipendula ulmaria (Meadowsweet).
  • Grasses & Reeds – Use Phragmites or Carex species to create a soft, natural riverside setting.

Alnus incana Multi-Stem is a versatile, striking, and ecologically beneficial tree, perfect for wetlands, wildlife habitats, and naturalised landscapes where resilience and adaptability are key.
