View full detailsWelcome to our exquisite collection of Hornbeam hedging, a classic favourite also known as European Hornbeam or Common Hornbeam, scientifically referred to as Carpinus betulus. This splendid hedge is celebrated for its lush green serrated leaves, forming an impenetrable screen that bestows privacy, security, and an effective shield against noise and wind upon your garden.
Otherwise known as Carpinus betulus, hornbeam hedges are deciduous plants that boast a stunning appearance throughout the year. These hedges typically grow to an average height of 4-6 meters, with a spread of 2-3 meters when fully mature.
One of the standout features of hornbeam hedges is their versatility. The name 'Hornbeam' originates from Old English, signifying a robust and enduring hedging species. That makes these hedges a go-to choice for those seeking year-round privacy.
Hornbeam hedges feature glossy, crinkled leaves that transition to a rich copper hue in autumn, persisting on branches throughout winter, offering year-round coverage and seasonal intrigue. Hornbeam hedge plants produce green catkins, maturing into fruits cherished by wildlife, including birds.
Carpinus betulus also thrives in challenging conditions, including clay and chalk soils. While it shares similarities with Beech hedging, Hornbeam hedge plants excel in wetter soils and exhibit a diverse array of captivating dark tones in their winter foliage.
Hornbeam thrives in a variety of conditions, adapting effortlessly to normal, clay, or chalk soils. Whether bathed in full sun or graced with semi-shade, this resilient hedge is equally at home in inland, coastal, or exposed sites.
Expect an average growth rate of 20-40cm per year, allowing you to effortlessly maintain it at heights ranging from 1 to 5 meters.

Water regularly during dry spells, especially when the hedge is newly planted. Once established, they will be ok, just keep an eye during dry hot spells.
Best pruning periods are late winter to early sping to help encourgae the hedge to thicken up once you get into the growing season. You can then lightly prune any unuly branches should you see any.
