Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Kilimanjaro', often referred to simply as Viburnum 'Kilimanjaro', is a highly decorative, deciduous shrub with a striking, layered, upright growth habit. This variety is particularly well-suited to UK gardens, offering year-round interest through its flowers, foliage, and berries. It typically reaches 3 metres (10 feet) in height with a spread of around 1.5 metres (5 feet), making it ideal for smaller spaces or as a specimen plant.

Key Features:

  • Flowers: In late spring (May), 'Kilimanjaro' produces tiered layers of lacecap-style white flowers. These flat-topped clusters appear along the horizontal branches, creating a cascading effect, resembling snow on a mountain—hence its name.
  • Berries: By autumn, the flowers are replaced by vivid red berries, which darken to black as they mature. These berries are not only ornamental but also attract birds, adding wildlife interest to the garden.
  • Foliage: The deep green, heavily textured, ovate leaves provide a lush backdrop in summer and turn rich shades of red and purple in autumn, enhancing the shrub's seasonal display.
  • Growth Habit: Viburnum 'Kilimanjaro' has an elegant, pyramidal shape with tiered, horizontal branches. This layered structure gives the plant a unique architectural quality, making it a standout feature in any garden.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, though it flowers best in full sun.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil, tolerant of a variety of soil types, including loam, clay, and sandy soils, as long as it is not waterlogged. It can also tolerate acidic to neutral pH levels.
  • Watering: Regular watering is required during establishment, and it benefits from consistent moisture, particularly in dry spells.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK, 'Kilimanjaro' can withstand cold winters and harsh weather conditions.

Landscape Uses:

This viburnum is perfect for use as a specimen plant, mixed borders, or shrub beds due to its upright, layered form. It offers multi-season interest with its spring blooms, summer berries, and autumn foliage. Its compact growth habit makes it suitable for small to medium gardens, providing structure and colour throughout the year.
