Yew -there is nothing more stately and quintessentially British than a yew hedge. There are several forms of Yew but only really Baccata are mass grown for evergreen hedging.

Yew hedging is a classic choice for creating dense, formal hedges with year-round greenery. Known for its slow growth and longevity, yew (Taxus baccata) is an evergreen conifer with dark green, needle-like foliage that responds well to pruning, allowing for precise shaping.

Yew is versatile, thriving in a range of soils, including chalky or clay, and can tolerate full sun or shade. It provides excellent privacy, wind protection, and a wildlife-friendly habitat, making it a timeless option for elegant, low-maintenance hedging in gardens and landscapes.

Yew Hedging (Taxus baccata) is a classic and versatile evergreen hedge that adds timeless elegance to any garden or outdoor space. Known for its dense, dark green foliage and slow, steady growth, yew is perfect for creating formal boundaries, privacy screens, or ornamental shapes in topiary gardens. Its rich colour and fine texture make it a popular choice for both traditional and modern landscapes.

Where to Position Your Yew Hedging

Yew thrives in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, from chalky to loamy and even slightly acidic soils. It prefers well-drained soil and can withstand urban pollution and exposed sites, making it ideal for a variety of garden settings. This hardy plant is suitable for formal hedging and can be clipped regularly to maintain a neat, structured appearance.

Growth and Maintenance

Yew hedging is relatively slow-growing, but with proper care, it can reach heights of up to 10 metres if left unclipped. However, regular pruning will encourage bushy growth and help shape the hedge. It’s recommended to trim yew once a year, ideally in late summer, to maintain its shape and density. Yew is highly resilient and can recover well from hard pruning if necessary, making it easy to maintain a healthy and attractive hedge.
