Taxus Baccata

Yew

Taxus baccata Cube (30cm) is a meticulously shaped evergreen feature, perfect for adding architectural elegance to formal or modern gardens. This compact, cube-shaped variety of English Yew is prized for its dense, dark green foliage and precise structure, offering a timeless blend of natural beauty and sculptural design.

1. Shape and Form

  • Design: A neatly clipped, geometric cube with sharp, clean lines.
  • Size: The 40cm dimension refers to its width and height, making it ideal for symmetrical arrangements or standalone displays.
  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing and compact, maintaining its shape well with minimal trimming.

2. Foliage

  • Color: Rich, deep green needles that retain their color year-round, providing consistent visual appeal.
  • Texture: Fine, soft needles create a dense, smooth surface, enhancing its sculptural appearance.

1. Preferred Conditions

  • Soil: Grows in a wide range of well-drained soils, from chalky to clay. Prefers slightly alkaline to neutral conditions.
  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, but tolerates deep shade better than most evergreens.
  • Location: Ideal for courtyards, patios, entrances, or as a focal point in garden beds.

Care and Maintenance

1. Pruning

  • Maintain the cube’s shape with light trimming once or twice a year, ideally in spring (April) or late summer (August).
  • Use sharp hedge shears to achieve precise, clean edges.

2. Feeding

  • Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy growth.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can promote excessive growth at the expense of density.

3. Mulching

  • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
