Acer Campestre – A Hardy and Versatile Native Tree
Acer Campestre, commonly known as the Field Maple, is a resilient and adaptable deciduous tree that thrives in various landscapes. As the UK’s only native maple, it is prized for its rich seasonal colour, compact size, and wildlife-friendly qualities, making it an excellent choice for gardens, hedgerows, and urban planting.
Seasonal Beauty & Growth
In spring, fresh bright green leaves emerge, creating a lush and vibrant canopy. By summer, the foliage deepens in colour, providing a dense, shady retreat. As autumn arrives, stunning golden-yellow tones transform the tree, offering a spectacular seasonal display before the leaves fall. The tree also produces clusters of small yellow-green flowers in spring, followed by distinctive winged seeds (samaras) in autumn.
Structure & Form
Acer campestre typically grows as a medium-sized tree, reaching 10–15m in height, with a rounded crown and attractive, deeply fissured bark that develops corky ridges over time. It can also be maintained as a dense, wildlife-friendly hedge, making it highly versatile in different landscapes.
