Pear

Pear 'Doyenné du Comice' is widely regarded as one of the finest dessert pear varieties due to its superb flavor and melting, juicy texture. Originating in France in the 19th century, this pear is often referred to as the "king of pears" for its rich, sweet taste and smooth, buttery flesh. In the UK, it is a popular choice for both home gardens and commercial orchards, especially in areas with a favorable climate.

Fruit Appearance:

  • Size and Shape: Large, rounded, slightly squat-shaped pears with a wide, rounded base that tapers to a short, thick neck.
  • Color: The skin is greenish-yellow, often flushed with a red or pink blush, especially when grown in sunny conditions. It can also show russet patches on the skin.
  • Flesh: Pale ivory-white, extremely juicy, smooth, and buttery in texture.
  • Flavor: Exceptionally sweet, rich, and aromatic. The flavor is complex and honeyed, with a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth quality when fully ripe.
  • Texture: The flesh is fine-grained, smooth, and melting. When perfectly ripe, it has a soft, juicy texture that almost dissolves in the mouth, making it ideal for eating fresh.
  • Season: 'Doyenné du Comice' pears are typically harvested in October in the UK. Like many pears, they benefit from being picked slightly under-ripe and allowed to ripen off the tree for a few weeks
  • Pollination Group: 'Doyenné du Comice' belongs to Pollination Group 4, flowering in mid to late season. It requires a compatible pollination partner, as it is not self-fertile. Suitable pollinators include Conference, Concorde, and Beth.
