Catalpa Bignionoides Nana

Dwarf Indian Bean Tree

Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' or Indian Bean Tree is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a compact, ornamental tree that adds beauty and interest to smaller spaces. Its lush foliage, stunning flowers, and low maintenance requirements make it an ideal addition to any garden. Whether used as a focal point, in mixed borders, or in containers, the Dwarf Southern Catalpa offers an attractive and functional solution for enhancing your outdoor space. With the right care, this delightful tree can thrive for many years, providing enjoyment and ecological benefits to your garden.

  • Size: This dwarf variety typically grows to a height of 3 to 5 meters (10 to 16 feet) and a similar spread, making it suitable for smaller gardens, patios, or as an ornamental feature.
  • Foliage: The leaves are large, heart-shaped, and lush green, similar to the parent species. They can reach up to 25 cm in length, providing a tropical look.
  • Flowers: In late spring to early summer, it produces lovely clusters of white flowers with purple and yellow markings, similar to the full-sized Southern Catalpa. The flowers are fragrant and attract pollinators. The dense foliage provides shelter for birds, making it an excellent choice for encouraging wildlife in the garden.

This tree performs best in full sun to partial shade. Nana thrives in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. It can tolerate a range of soil types but prefers loamy conditions. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. This helps promote a healthy structure and encourages dense growth.
