Callicarpa are also know as Beauty Berry. They are at their best in Autumn / Winter when they produce violet purple berries on bare stems. The foliage starts off bronze and matures to green with age. It's best to prune beautyberry shrubs in late winter or very early spring. There are two methods of pruning. The simplest is to cut the entire shrub back to 6 inches above the ground. It grows back with a neat, rounded shape.

The beautyberry tolerates various soil conditions but grows best in moist, well-draining soils. Callicarpa Imperial Pearl bear stunning purple flowers in summer, green foliage that turns autumnal oranges before dropping off, followed by unreal purple berries for the winter display. They can reach a height of 4 to 6 feet.

The Callicarpa 'Imperial Pearl' is an eye-catching deciduous shrub, admired for its unique and vibrant appearance. Best known for its clusters of striking, violet-purple berries that appear in autumn and persist into winter, this plant adds a splash of colour to the garden when many other plants have faded. The berries contrast beautifully against its green foliage, which turns to shades of yellow and bronze in the autumn, making it a standout feature in any landscape.

Where to Position Your Callicarpa 'Imperial Pearl'

Callicarpa 'Imperial Pearl' thrives best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil to support its healthy growth and prolific berry production. This shrub is ideal for mixed borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant, where its colourful berries can be fully appreciated. Regular watering during dry spells will help maintain its vibrant foliage and ensure a good berry crop.

Growth and Maintenance

Callicarpa 'Imperial Pearl' is valued for its compact, bushy habit and ease of care. Typically reaching a height and spread of 1.5 to 2 metres, it is a manageable size for most gardens. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged wood and to shape the shrub as needed. This encourages new growth and maximises the display of berries.
