Cornus 'Baton Rouge' – A Striking, Vibrant Dogwood for Year-Round Interest

Cornus 'Baton Rouge' is an exceptional variety of dogwood that stands out for its vibrant, red-tinted foliage and stunning year-round appeal. With a compact, rounded form, this deciduous shrub or small tree brings both color and texture to gardens, offering seasonal interest that changes with the seasons. Its eye-catching red stems, large white flowers, and bright red berries make it a versatile and attractive choice for borders, garden accents, and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

  • Spring: Early spring sees the emergence of rich green leaves, followed by clusters of creamy white flowers that create a striking contrast against the fresh foliage. The flowers give way to green berries that gradually mature to bright red.
  • Summer: The leaves retain their fresh green hue throughout the summer, creating a lush backdrop for the shrub's red stems. The plant remains dense and compact, making it a perfect focal point in the landscape.
  • Autumn: In fall, the foliage turns vibrant shades of red and purple, offering a beautiful seasonal display. The bright red berries persist through the autumn months, adding to the striking color.
  • Winter: The plant's red stems provide visual interest throughout the winter, offering a bold contrast against the backdrop of winter’s more muted tones, and providing much-needed structure to the garden.

Structure & Form
Cornus 'Baton Rouge' grows into a compact, rounded shrub or small tree that reaches a height of 1.5–2.5 meters and a spread of 1.5–2 meters. It has a dense, bushy form, with dark green leaves in summer that transform into brilliant reds and purples in the fall. The showy white flowers are borne in large clusters, giving the plant a delicate, airy feel in the spring. The red stems, which persist throughout the year, add architectural interest and brighten the landscape, especially in winter when the tree is bare of leaves.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Mixed Borders: 'Baton Rouge' adds color, texture, and structure to mixed borders, where its seasonal interest contrasts beautifully with other plants.
  • Wildlife Gardens: The berries of 'Baton Rouge' are an excellent food source for birds, while its flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its dense form also provides shelter for wildlife.
  • Contemporary Gardens: The plant’s compact size and striking red stems make it a perfect addition to modern gardens, where it can serve as both a specimen and a focal point in minimalist or sleek landscape designs.
  • Foundation Plantings: This dogwood is ideal for planting near the foundation of a home or in front of walls or fences, where its vibrant colors and compact form can be appreciated from a distance.
  • Woodland Gardens: 'Baton Rouge' works wonderfully in partially shaded or woodland gardens, where it complements the natural setting while adding a pop of color in the fall and winter.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Cornus 'Baton Rouge' thrives in full sun to partial shade. It will flower best in full sun, where it will develop the brightest color and most abundant berries. However, it will tolerate some shade, especially in hotter climates.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, moist, slightly acidic to neutral soil. While it is adaptable to various soil types, it grows best in rich, loamy soil that retains moisture but does not become waterlogged.
  • Hardiness: Hardy, making it suitable for a wide range of climates. It is tolerant of cold temperatures but may need some protection in very harsh winters, particularly in the first few years.
  • Maintenance: 'Baton Rouge' requires minimal care. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning to remove dead or damaged wood and maintain its shape. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and mulch around the base to keep the soil moist.
  • Fertilization: It benefits from an annual application of balanced fertilizer in early spring to support vigorous growth and flowering, though it will grow well in average garden soil without heavy feeding.

Why Choose Cornus 'Baton Rouge'?
Cornus 'Baton Rouge' offers year-round beauty, from its vibrant white flowers in spring to its striking fall foliage and red stems in winter. Its compact size and dense, bushy form make it perfect for smaller gardens or as part of a mixed planting scheme. The plant is wildlife-friendly, attracting pollinators and providing food for birds, while its colorful features ensure that it makes a bold statement throughout the year. Its adaptability to both sun and partial shade, combined with its ease of care, makes it an excellent choice for gardeners of all experience levels.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • Perennials: Pair with shade-loving perennials like Astilbes or Hosta for a rich textural contrast, or with Echinacea for vibrant color contrasts in late summer and fall.
  • Grasses: Combine with ornamental grasses like Panicum virgatum or Miscanthus for added movement and texture in mixed plantings.
  • Other Shrubs: Plant alongside other deciduous shrubs like Spiraea or Forsythia to create a harmonious blend of flowering plants.
  • Groundcovers: Underplant with groundcovers like Creeping Jenny or Ajuga to provide a soft, low-maintenance carpet that complements the upright form of the dogwood.

Conclusion
Cornus 'Baton Rouge' is a striking and versatile shrub that brings beauty, structure, and seasonal interest to the garden. Its compact size, vibrant red stems, and eye-catching white flowers make it an excellent choice for a wide variety of landscapes.
