Hydrangea paniculata Kyushu

Kyushu Hydrangea

Hydrangea are deciduous shrubs and climbers. They are grown for their beautiful flowers that last throughout the Summer and Autumn. Hydrangea leaves are narrowly ovate and change colour through Autumn from green to orange-brown Hydrangea like to grown in sun and partial shade, they thrive best in fertile and well-drained soil. There are two main types, the old fashioned shrubby type and the woody form.

Hydrangea paniculata Kyushu is a stunning deciduous shrub celebrated for its large, showy flower clusters and its versatility in garden design. This cultivar of panicle hydrangea is particularly admired for its vigorous growth and long-lasting blooms, making it a favorite among gardeners in the UK.

  • Leaves: The leaves are dark green, oval to lance-shaped, and have a serrated edge. They provide a lush backdrop for the large flower clusters. The foliage typically turns yellow in autumn, adding another layer of interest before leaf drop.
  • Bloom Time: Kyushu flowers from mid-summer to early autumn (July to September), providing a lengthy period of floral display. The large, conical flower heads begin as creamy white and gradually turn pink as they mature, creating a beautiful transition of colors.
  • Height and Spread: Hydrangea 'Kyushu' typically grows to a height of about 1.2 to 1.5 meter

Kyushu thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil. It is adaptable to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, as long as they are well-aerated and retain moisture. Does best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. However, it flowers best when given at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring, cutting back the previous year’s growth by about one-third to promote strong flowering. An application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring can promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that encourage foliage growth at the expense of blooms.
