Parrotia

Parrotia or Ironwood Tree

Planting a Parrotia tree is a rewarding investment, offering beauty and durability for years to come. Its adaptability and striking appearance make it a versatile choice for gardens

  • Stunning Foliage: Parrotia trees are prized for their vibrant autumn colors. Their leaves transition from green to shades of yellow, orange, and deep red, creating a spectacular display.
  • Attractive Bark: As the tree matures, the bark exfoliates in patches, revealing a mosaic of grey, green, cream, and brown tones, adding year-round visual interest.
  • Compact Size: Parrotia trees are well-suited to smaller gardens, reaching a manageable height of 6–10m, depending on the variety.
  • Seasonal Interest: In late winter or early spring, small, spidery red flowers appear on bare branches, providing early-season charm.

Where To Site Your Parrotia

Ideal as a feature tree for garden landscapes or public spaces.

Tolerates various soil types and urban environments, making it perfect for UK gardens and cityscapes.

How To Grow Your Parrotia

Plant in full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and autumn colours. Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Parrotia can tolerate heavier clay soils if drainage is adequate.

Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the tree's natural, graceful shape. Minimal pruning is needed; remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter or early spring

Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to encourage growth
