Osmanthus Ball

Osmanthus x burkwoodii Topiary Balls are a refined and low-maintenance option for year-round greenery in the garden. Known for its dense, evergreen foliage, Osmanthus x burkwoodii (Burkwood Osmanthus) has dark green, glossy leaves and produces a stunning display of fragrant white flowers in spring. This makes it ideal for topiary, adding both structure and seasonal interest. With a naturally compact growth habit and tolerance for pruning, Osmanthus topiary balls are well-suited for both formal and informal settings

  • Foliage: Dark green, leathery, oval leaves with a glossy finish. The dense foliage creates a lush, full appearance year-round.
  • Growth Habit: Compact and slow-growing, Osmanthus topiary balls maintain their shape well, requiring minimal pruning.
  • Size: These balls can range from 30 cm to 1.5 meter plus in diameter, and the plant’s slow growth makes it easy to keep them at the desired size with occasional trimming.
  • Flowers: Produces small, white, highly fragrant flowers in late spring, adding an attractive feature to garden spaces.

Growing Conditions:

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil but is adaptable to a range of soil types, as long as they drain well.
  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; too much shade can reduce flowering, but partial shade is tolerated well.
  • Watering: Requires minimal watering once established, though it will benefit from additional moisture during prolonged dry periods.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in late spring or early autumn to maintain the ball shape. Due to its slow growth, only minor shaping is generally needed.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base in early spring to retain moisture and enrich the soil, leaving a gap around the stem to avoid rot.
  • Positioning: Place Osmanthus balls in areas where their fragrance can be enjoyed, like near entrances, patios, or walkways.
