Cornus Mas

Cornelian Cherry

Cornus Mas is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to parts of Europe and Western Asia. It’s prized for its early spring flowers, edible fruits, and year-round ornamental appeal.

  • Size: Cornelian Cherry typically grows to a height of 4 to 7 meters with a similar spread, making it suitable for both small and medium-sized gardens.
  • Foliage: The leaves are ovate and dark green, turning reddish-purple in autumn, providing seasonal interest.
  • Flowers: One of the first trees to flower in early spring (February to March), Cornus mas produces clusters of small, bright yellow flowers, even before the leaves emerge. This early flowering provides an uplifting splash of color when little else is in bloom.
  • Fruit: In late summer, the tree bears bright red, cherry-like drupes. These are edible and can be used to make jams, sauces, or eaten fresh (though they are somewhat tart). The fruits are also popular with wildlife.

Cornus Mas prefers well-drained, fertile soils, it can adapt to a range of soil conditions. It does well in both slightly acidic and slightly alkaline soils. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Full sun will result in more abundant flowering and fruiting, but it can also tolerate light shade, especially in hotter areas. Light pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to shape the plant or remove any damaged or dead branches. It can also be pruned to maintain a tree-like shape if desired.
