Maples & Sycamores

Acers - Maples and Sycamores

In the U.K., Acer is a broad genus of trees and shrubs that includes both maples and sycamores, but there are key differences between the two. Here's a breakdown:

Acer (Maples)

  • Maples include species like Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) and Acer rubrum (Red Maple).
  • Known for their delicate, lobed leaves, which often have a dramatic, ornamental appearance.
  • Popular for their vibrant autumn foliage in shades of red, orange, and gold.
  • Tend to be smaller and more decorative than sycamores, making them ideal for gardens.
  • Common in landscaping for their striking foliage and manageable size.
  • Frequently used as ornamental trees in gardens or urban spaces.

Sycamores (Acer pseudoplatanus)

  • Larger and hardier than most other maples, with broader leaves and a more rugged growth habit.
  • Leaves are typically five-lobed, with a coarser texture compared to the delicate leaves of Japanese maples.
  • Produces characteristic "helicopter" seeds (samaras) that spin as they fall to the ground.
  • Often planted in parks or rural settings for windbreaks or as shade trees.
  • Not typically chosen for small gardens due to its large size.

Where to site your Acers

If you are planting one, your choice will depend on the size of your space and the visual impact you wish to achieve!

How to grow and look after your Maples

Maples like a soil that stays loose and moist but not swampy or thin and rocky as the roots can't anchor properly in the ground. Soil PH is preferred to be on the acidic side and they do not grow well in very alkaline soil.

They are also very sensitive to salt levels in the soil and water so do not do well in coastal positions.

Green and purple leafed varieties cope well in full sun but strong sunlight can scorch golden ones.
