Magnolias are deciduous or evergreen shrubs commonly found in woodlands or along river banks. They are grown for their showy, erect flowers which come in a wide range of colours from white to purple. Leaves are borne after the flowers and are ovate and alternate.

Magnolia ‘Susan’ is an excellent choice for UK gardeners looking for a striking and elegant addition to their landscape. Its rich-colored flowers, attractive foliage, and adaptability make it a valuable addition to various garden styles. Whether used as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or in more naturalistic settings, Magnolia ‘Susan’ provides beauty and charm, particularly during its impressive flowering season. This lovely magnolia is sure to delight gardeners and passersby alike with its stunning blooms and graceful presence.

  • Leaves: The leaves are broad, elliptical, and dark green, measuring about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) long. They provide a lush backdrop to the vibrant flowers.
  • Autumn Color: In autumn, the leaves may turn a yellowish hue before they fall, adding some seasonal interest.
  • Bloom Time: Magnolia ‘Susan’ typically blooms in mid to late spring, usually from April to May, depending on the climate.
  • Flower Appearance: The flowers are cup-shaped and measure about 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) across. They have a deep reddish-purple or magenta color with a silky texture, creating a striking contrast against the dark green leaves.
  • Fragrance: While not strongly fragrant, the blooms are visually captivating and attract pollinators.
  • Height and Spread: This magnolia usually grows to a height of about 3 to 4 meters with a spread of about 3 to 5 meters, making it suitable for smaller gardens and urban landscapes.

Magnolia ‘Susan’ prefers rich, well-drained soils that retain some moisture. Loamy or sandy soils with good organic matter content are ideal. This magnolia thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. For the best flowering and overall health, plant it in a sunny location.
