View full detailsLeylandii Hedging is a popular choice for creating fast-growing, dense screens and hedges. Known for its impressive height and quick growth, Leylandii provides excellent privacy and wind protection. It's an ideal option for creating tall, effective barriers in a range of garden settings.
If you are planting them close to a Neighbour, you should seek advice on whether you now need planning permission. There has been a lot of bad press about them, and they are not for the small urban garden. They are for larger sites where you need to hide something from view or create distinctive borders.
Plant Leylandii in a sunny location with well-drained soil for optimal growth. It adapts well to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
For the best results, choose a spot with good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. Leylandii can be used to create tall, dense hedges or privacy screens, making it suitable for blocking views and sheltering outdoor spaces.
Leylandii is known for its rapid growth, reaching heights of 4 to 6 meters or more, depending on the variety and conditions. It can grow approximately 60 to 90 centimetres per year under optimal conditions, making it a robust choice for quickly establishing high hedges and screens. Regular maintenance is required to manage its size and density
Due to its fast growth rate, Leylandii requires regular pruning to maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too wide or tall. Prune Leylandii in late summer or early autumn to shape the hedge and remove any excessive growth. Regular trimming helps keep the hedge dense and healthy while preventing it from becoming overgrown. Be cautious not to cut into old wood, as Leylandii may not regrow from it.
Water Leylandii regularly, especially during dry periods, to ensure it establishes a strong root system. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent waterlogging.
Prune Leylandii annually in late summer or early autumn to maintain its shape and density. Regular trimming helps control its size and promotes healthy, bushy growth. Avoid severe pruning in late winter or early spring as it may affect new growth.
Feed Leylandii with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support vigorous growth. Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and provide additional nutrients.
Small, green or black insects on the leaves and stems, causing distorted growth and a sticky residue. Regular inspection and appropriate treatments can manage infestations.
Tiny yellow or white specks on the leaves, with webbing on the undersides. These pests cause a dusty appearance and may lead to leaf drops. Increase humidity and ensure proper watering to control them.
Bumps on leaves and stems, often with a sticky, honeydew residue and sooty mold. Remove affected areas and treat them with suitable insecticides if necessary.
Orange or rust-colored spots on the foliage, often with a powdery texture. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of rust disease. Remove affected leaves and apply fungicides if necessary.
