Sorbus Intermedia

Swedish Whitebeam

Sorbus intermedia, commonly known as the Swedish Whitebeam is an attractive medium-sized deciduous tree with a rounded, spreading canopy. It is appreciated for its silvery-green leaves, white spring flowers, and ornamental red berries. Very popular in urban environments, due to its hardiness and tolerance of pollution.

  • Leaves: The leaves are oval or slightly lobed, with a distinctively serrated edge. The undersides of the leaves are covered with a silvery or woolly texture, which gives the tree a silver sheen in the wind. Leaves are dark green on top, with silvery or pale green undersides. In autumn, they turn shades of yellow or orange before falling.
  • Flowers: Produces clusters of small white flowers in late spring (May to June). The flowers attract bees and other pollinators, contributing to local biodiversity.
  • Fruits: After flowering, the tree produces small, round berries (pomes) in late summer to autumn. The berries are orange-red and persist into the winter, providing food for birds.
  • Bark: The bark is smooth and grey when young, becoming slightly more textured and fissured as the tree matures.
  • Height: Typically grows to around 10-15 meters (33-49 feet), although in optimal conditions it can reach slightly taller heights.
  • Shape: It has a compact, rounded form, making it ideal for smaller spaces, streets, or urban settings.

Sorbus intermedia prefers full sun for optimal growth but can tolerate partial shade. In shadier areas, flower and fruit production may be slightly reduced. Thrives in a wide range of soils, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, provided they are well-drained. It is known to grow well in poorer soils, making it suitable for urban and less fertile environments. Fully hardy in the UK, able to withstand cold winter temperatures and frost without issue. It is particularly suited to cooler climates and thrives in coastal and inland areas. Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches, though regular pruning is not necessary.

  • Due to its tolerance of pollution and compact growth habit, Sorbus intermedia is widely used as a street tree in the UK.
  • Its moderate size and attractive features make it suitable for smaller gardens or urban yards where space is limited.
  • The combination of white flowers, red berries, and silvery foliage makes it an excellent choice for ornamental planting in parks, public spaces, or residential gardens.
  • This tree thrives in coastal environments, tolerating salt-laden winds, making it an ideal choice for seaside planting.
