Sophora japonica Styphnolobium

Japanese Pagoda Tree

Sophora japonica, now classified as Styphnolobium japonicum, commonly known as the Japanese Pagoda Tree is a beautiful deciduous tree prized for its graceful form, lush foliage, and late-summer clusters of creamy white flowers

it is widely grown in the UK for its ornamental value and adaptability:

  • Leaves: The foliage consists of pinnate (feather-like) leaves that are medium to dark green. Each leaf has around 7-17 small, ovate leaflets that create a delicate, airy appearance. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow before dropping, adding seasonal interest.
  • Growth Habit: It forms a broad, spreading canopy with arching branches, providing a light, dappled shade beneath.
  • Bloom Time: One of the standout features of Sophora japonica is its late bloom time, flowering in late summer (August to September), which is unusual for most trees.
  • Flower Appearance: The flowers are small, pea-like, and creamy white, grouped in large, pendulous clusters (panicles). They are fragrant and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Flower Size: Each cluster of flowers can reach up to 30 cm in length, making a dramatic floral display against the green foliage.
  • Appearance: After flowering, the tree produces distinctive green, bead-like pods that resemble strings of pearls. These seed pods persist into winter, turning a brownish color and adding winter interest to the tree.
  • Non-Edible: The pods contain seeds that are toxic to humans and animals, so they should not be consumed.
  • Height and Spread: Sophora japonica can grow up to 12 to 20 meters tall, with a similar spread, making it a large tree ideal for spacious gardens or parks.

This tree prefers well-drained soil but is very adaptable, tolerating a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and even clay soils. Thrives in full sun, which helps promote the best flower and foliage development. It can tolerate some light shade but prefers a sunny position.
