Bamboo Fargesia 'Rufa' is a highly attractive evergreen bamboo with soft, arching canes and dense green foliage. This non-invasive variety forms a graceful, fountain-like shape, making it a standout feature in any garden.
Where Should I Site My Bamboo?
Like many Fargesia varieties, Bamboo Fargesia 'Rufa' is adaptable and tolerant of various conditions. For the best results, plant it in a sheltered location with dappled shade to partial sun. It thrives in fertile, moisture-retentive soil that is well-drained, as bamboo does not tolerate waterlogged conditions.
Growth and Pruning
Fargesia 'Rufa', often referred to as Chinese fountain bamboo, grows at a moderate pace, forming dense clumps. It typically reaches a height of 2 to 3 metres, making it an excellent choice for use as a specimen plant, windbreak, or privacy screen. This bamboo is easier to maintain at a smaller size compared to other varieties.
Due to its moderate growth rate, Fargesia 'Rufa' requires less frequent pruning. However, to keep the plant healthy and manageable, remove weak, dead, or damaged canes at ground level throughout the year. Clearing debris at the base and thinning lower foliage by snapping off side branches or using secateurs will improve airflow and promote growth. In spring, yellowing and dropping leaves are normal as new growth emerges.
