Davidia involucrata, commonly known as the Handkerchief Tree or Dove Tree, is a deciduous tree prized for its unique and striking display of white, bract-like flowers in late spring. The tree typically reaches a height of 10-15 metres (33-50 feet) in the UK, making it a medium-sized tree well-suited for larger gardens or parks.

Key Features:

  • Flowers: In May, Davidia involucrata produces small, rounded clusters of flowers surrounded by large, drooping, white bracts that resemble handkerchiefs or doves. These bracts can be up to 30cm (12 inches) long and are the tree’s most iconic feature.
  • Foliage: The broad, heart-shaped leaves are bright green in spring and summer, turning shades of yellow in autumn before falling.
  • Bark: As the tree matures, its smooth, grey bark adds interest, creating year-round appeal.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Prefers a position in full sun or partial shade. A sheltered spot is ideal to protect the delicate bracts from wind damage.
  • Soil: Thrives in moist, well-drained soils, and prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. It is adaptable but grows best in rich, loamy soil.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering during dry periods, particularly while establishing.

Landscape Uses:

Davidia involucrata is often grown as a specimen tree in lawns or large gardens, where its unique flowering display can be fully appreciated. Its architectural shape and seasonal interest make it a standout choice in woodland gardens or as a focal point.

While slow-growing and often taking several years to flower, the Handkerchief Tree rewards patience with one of the most unique floral displays in the plant kingdom
