Berberis thunbergii 'Orange Torch', a variety of Japanese barberry, is a deciduous shrub prized for its stunning seasonal color changes, adding vibrant interest to gardens. Known for its upright, columnar form and vivid foliage, 'Orange Torch' offers color throughout the year, starting with orange-red hues in spring, transitioning to bright green in summer, and returning to a warm orange or deep red in autumn. This variety is not only beautiful but also resilient, with thorny branches that provide both structure and added security as a natural barrier.

  • Foliage Color: Leaves start with a fiery orange in spring, transition to lush green through summer, and turn a brilliant orange or deep red in autumn.
  • Form: Upright and columnar, making it perfect for small spaces, borders, or as a vertical accent in larger plantings.
  • Size: Reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 meters (4-6 feet) and a spread of approximately 0.5 to 1 meter (1.5-3 feet).
  • Flowers and Berries: Small, pale yellow flowers bloom in spring, attracting pollinators. Flowers are followed by small red berries in autumn, which provide seasonal interest and are a source of food for birds.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and can adapt to a variety of soil types, including loam, sandy, and clay soils. Tolerates mildly acidic to neutral pH levels.
  • Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, although full sun brings out the richest colors in the foliage.
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and size. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

Its columnar shape and thorny branches make it ideal for hedges or boundary planting, adding security and structure. Excellent as a colorful focal point in mixed borders or garden beds. The flowers attract pollinators, while autumn berries provide food for birds, adding ecological value to the garden.
