Hydrangea are deciduous shrubs and climbers. They are grown for their beautiful flowers that last throughout the Summer and Autumn. Hydrangea leaves are narrowly ovate and change colour through Autumn from green to orange-brown. Hydrangea prefer to be in partial shade and thrive best in fertile well-drained soil.
Hydrangea Aspera Macrophylla is an award winning variety that lends an exotic, almost tropical feel to the garden. They are a striking addition to the garden, especially for those looking for something a little different from the more common hydrangea varieties. This lesser-known species stands out due to its unusual features, such as large, velvety leaves and delicate lacecap-style blooms.
Macrophylla produces beautiful lacecap-style blooms, with tiny fertile flowers at the center surrounded by a ring of larger sterile flowers. The central blooms are usually a soft lilac or purplish-blue, while the outer sterile flowers are typically pale blue or white, creating a delicate, elegant contrast. These lacecap flowers bloom from midsummer to early autumn (July to September), adding colour and interest during the later part of the growing season. One of the most distinctive features of Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla' is its large, soft, velvety leaves. The leaves are textured, dark green, and can grow quite large.
Hydrangea aspera 'Macrophylla' is an excellent choice for shady gardens, where it thrives in partial to full shade. 'Macrophylla' requires very little pruning, which makes it an easy-care option. Any necessary pruning, such as removing dead or damaged wood, is typically done in early spring before new growth begins. Although it appreciates regular watering, Hydrangea aspera can tolerate short periods of drought once established, making it relatively low-maintenance compared to more water-hungry varieties.
It can brighten up areas where other plants might struggle, making it a valuable addition to woodland gardens, shaded borders, or north-facing walls.
