Hankerchief Tree

Davidia also known as the Hankerchief Tree

Also known as the Dove Tree or Ghost Tree, is a rare and beautiful deciduous tree that can be an extraordinary addition to UK gardens. Native to China, it is best known for its striking white bracts that resemble handkerchiefs, doves, or ghostly shapes fluttering in the breeze.

Adds a touch of rare beauty and drama to your garden. Its iconic white bracts that flutter like handkerchiefs, coupled with its autumn color and interesting fruit, make it a stunning specimen tree for larger gardens. While it may take time to mature and flower, the tree’s long-term ornamental value and low-maintenance nature make it a rewarding choice. Hardy and adaptable to the UK’s climate, the Handkerchief Tree thrives in cool, moist environments, providing seasonal interest throughout the year. If you’re looking for a unique, standout tree with a sense of history and rarity, the Handkerchief Tree is an excellent choice

Where To Site

  • Medium to Large Size: The Handkerchief Tree can grow to a height of 12–20 meters (40–65 feet) and a spread of 8–12 meters (25–40 feet). Due to its size, it is best suited to larger gardens or parks where it has plenty of space to grow and spread out.
  • Standout Specimen Tree: Its dramatic flowering display and impressive size make it an ideal focal point or specimen tree in the garden. It works well as a standalone tree in a lawn or large border where it can be fully appreciated.
  • Rare Beauty: This tree is considered a horticultural gem due to its rarity and the extraordinary display of its flowers. Its unique appearance sets it apart from other trees in the garden and makes it a conversation starter.

How To Grow Davidia

  • Preferred Site: The Handkerchief Tree prefers a sunny or partially shaded position. It thrives best in sheltered locations that protect it from strong winds.
  • Soil Requirements: It does well in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. The tree prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil but can tolerate a range of soil types as long as it is not waterlogged.
  • Watering: While the tree is established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, but young trees should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods.
  • Mulching: Mulching around the base of the tree helps to conserve moisture and maintain soil fertility, benefiting the tree’s growth.
