Cortaderia selloana 'Green Goblin', commonly known as Green Goblin Pampas Grass, is a distinctive variety of Pampas Grass known for its impressive plumes and more compact growth compared to traditional varieties. This hardy and decorative grass is well-suited to gardens, adding visual texture and architectural height without overwhelming smaller spaces.

  • Appearance: Green Goblin produces striking silver-white plumes atop dense, upright green foliage. Its leaves are arching and narrow, with a vibrant green color, giving a lush look all year round. The feathery plumes appear from late summer to autumn, adding dynamic movement and eye-catching contrast
  • Height: Reaches approximately 1.5 to 2 meters (around 5 to 6.5 feet) in height, making it more manageable for smaller spaces than traditional pampas varieties.
  • Compact Growth: Unlike other larger pampas varieties, Green Goblin maintains a tidy, compact form that makes it a good choice for smaller gardens, mixed borders, and container planting.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil but adapts well to most types, including sandy and moderately acidic soils. Ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging, as Green Goblin does not thrive in soggy soil.
  • Best grown in full sun, which enhances plume development and overall plant health.
  • Trim back to ground level in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth for the upcoming season. This will keep the plant tidy and promote strong, vigorous growth.
  • Every few years, Green Goblin can be divided in spring to manage its size and renew growth, especially if it’s starting to crowd other plants.

Its compact size and unique plumes make it perfect for small gardens, border plantings, or as a low-maintenance focal point. Green Goblin’s compact form adapts well to containers, making it a stylish choice for patios or balconies. The plumes can be dried for indoor arrangements, bringing natural texture indoors throughout the winter.

The Panicum virgatum Northwind is an impressive ornamental grass celebrated for its upright, columnar form and striking seasonal display. This deciduous grass features narrow, vertical green leaves that transform into a rich golden-yellow in autumn, creating a stunning contrast in the garden. In late summer, it produces airy, reddish-brown flower panicles that add movement and texture to the landscape. Its elegant, architectural growth habit makes it an excellent choice for garden beds, borders, or as a dramatic focal point.

Where to Position Your Panicum virgatum Northwind

Panicum virgatum Northwind thrives best in full sun, which enhances its vertical growth and autumnal colour. It should be planted in well-drained, moderately fertile soil to ensure robust growth and a vibrant display. This hardy grass adapts well to various soil types and conditions, making it a versatile addition to many garden styles. Regular watering during dry spells will help keep the grass lush and maintain its striking appearance.

Growth and Maintenance

Renowned for its elegant form and minimal care requirements, Panicum virgatum Northwind needs only basic maintenance. In late winter or early spring, cut back the previous year's growth to about 10-15 cm above the ground to encourage fresh new shoots. This grass is generally pest and disease-resistant, making it a reliable and easy-to-grow option for adding height and texture to your garden.
