Full and Three Quarter Standards

Full and Three-Quarter Standards are elegant and formal additions to any garden or landscape, celebrated for their refined, columnar shapes. These topiary specimens are meticulously sculpted from small trees or shrubs, creating a striking vertical presence that enhances your outdoor space. Standards are typically formed by clearing a straight trunk to about 2 meters in height and then developing a well-shaped head at the top. This can be achieved with a single plant or by grafting onto a more robust root and stem stock.

Where Should I Place My Full and Three-Quarter Standards?

These topiary forms thrive in a variety of conditions but perform best in locations with partial shade to full sun. They should be planted in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil to prevent waterlogging, which can harm the roots. Soil that retains moisture effectively is ideal and using a soaker hose can help maintain consistent moisture levels, especially during dry spells.

Growth

The growth rate of Full and Three-Quarter Standards can vary depending on the plant species, and at Grasslands, we offer options suited to different preferences. Photinia Full and Three-Quarter Standards grow at a moderate pace, quickly developing their lush, dense forms with vibrant red and green foliage that requires regular maintenance to retain its shape. Ficus Full Standards also grow moderately, providing a lush, full appearance that benefits from periodic pruning to maintain its neat, rounded shape. Olive Full Standards, on the other hand, grow more slowly, offering a classic, refined look that gradually develops its distinctive, elegant form.

Caring Tips for Full and Three-Quarter Standards

Watering Full and Three-Quarter Standards

To water Full and Three-Quarter Standards, start with thorough watering when planting to establish roots. Water deeply once or twice a week, adjusting for weather conditions. Increase frequency during dry spells and reduce in cooler weather. Check that the soil is moist but not waterlogged; if it feels dry a few inches down, it's time to water. Mulch around the base to retain moisture, but keep it away from the trunk to prevent rot. In winter, water less, only if the soil is dry. This routine keeps your trees healthy and looking their best.

Pruning Full and Three-Quarter Standards

Full and Three Quarter Standards are slow growing, making them easier to manage with less frequent pruning. Regular pruning is crucial to maintain their elegant columnar shapes and promote healthy growth. To preserve their formal appearance, trim off any weak, dead, or protruding branches and clear away debris at the base. Sharp shears are recommended to maintain the clean, defined lines of the topiary. A complete trim, typically performed in late winter or early spring, combined with occasional touch-ups throughout the year, will ensure your standards remain in excellent condition.

Feeding Full and Three-Quarter Standards

Topiary plants are relatively easy to care for but do require regular attention to maintain their neat and tidy appearance. They are often kept in pots, so consistent watering and high-quality topiary compost are necessary. Using a specialist topiary fertiliser can help manage growth and reduce the need for frequent pruning. Topiary frames can also be used to guide the shaping process, ensuring a perfectly formed topiary.

Signs of Pests and Disease

Powdery Mildew

A fungal disease that appears as a white, powdery coating on leaves and stems, often thriving in warm, dry conditions with poor air circulation.

Root Rot

Caused by overwatering or poorly draining soil, root rot results in soggy soil and decaying roots, which can cause wilting and leaf drop.

Phytophtora

A fungal pathogen leading to root rot and potential tree instability.

Spider Mites

These tiny pests cause stippling or a speckled appearance on leaves and can lead to webbing. They thrive in dry, dusty conditions.

Aphids

Small, soft-bodied insects that feed on plant sap, causing curling or distortion of leaves. They can also excrete honeydew, leading to sooty mould.

Scale Insects

These pests attach themselves to stems and leaves and feed on sap, appearing as small, immobile bumps on the plant.
