Apple 'Elstar' is a popular dessert apple variety in the UK, known for its sweet, tangy flavor and crisp texture. Originally bred in the Netherlands in 1955, it has become widely grown across Europe, including the UK, due to its excellent eating quality and versatility. It is a cross between Golden Delicious and Ingrid Marie, inheriting the sweetness of the former and the rich flavor of the latter.

Fruit Appearance:

  • Size and Shape: Medium-sized, round, or slightly conical apples.
  • Colour: The skin is primarily yellow with a flush of red or orange, giving it an attractive, bi-coloured appearance.
  • Flesh: The flesh is cream-colored, firm, and crisp, offering a juicy texture.

Taste:

  • Flavour: The apple has a well-balanced flavour, combining sweetness with a touch of acidity. Its honeyed taste with a slight tang makes it a favourite for fresh eating.
  • Texture: Crisp and juicy, ideal for both raw consumption and use in cooking.

    Harvest Time:

    • Season: In the UK, ‘Elstar’ apples are typically ready for harvest in September and can be enjoyed fresh through the autumn months. They can also be stored for a few months under the right conditions.
  • Pollination:
    • Pollination Group: 'Elstar' belongs to Pollination Group 3, meaning it flowers in mid-season. It requires cross-pollination from another apple variety that blooms around the same time, such as Cox’s Orange Pippin, Golden Delicious, or James Grieve.
    • Self-sterile: It is not self-fertile, so planting near a compatible pollinator is essential for fruit production.
