Prunus Kanzan

Japanese Flowering Cherry

Prunus 'Kanzan', also known as the Japanese flowering cherry 'Kanzan', is one of the most popular and striking ornamental cherry trees It's renowned for its spectacular display of double pink flowers in spring and its vibrant autumn foliage. This tree is widely planted in gardens, parks, and along streets because of its showy blossoms and relatively easy maintenance.

  • Double flowers (multi-petaled): Bright pink. arranged in large clusters. Typically blooms in late April to early May, creating a stunning display. The blossoms appear before or alongside the leaves. Slightly scented, though not as strongly fragrant as some other Prunus varieties.
  • Leaves:When the leaves first emerge, they are often coppery-bronze in color.  The foliage matures to a glossy, dark green. The leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, providing additional seasonal interest after the spring bloom.
  • A medium-sized tree, typically growing to a height of 6-10 meters (about 20-30 feet) with a spread of around 5-8 meters (15-25 feet) at maturity.
  • The bark is smooth, reddish-brown with horizontal lenticels (markings), adding winter interest when the tree is bare.
  • While Prunus 'Kanzan' is primarily grown for its flowers, it occasionally produces small, dark fruits. However, the fruit is not significant or ornamental and is often sparse.

Prunus Kanzan prefers full sun for the best flowering performance. It thrives in sunny positions. Grows well in well-drained soils but is adaptable to different types, including loamy, clay, or sandy soils. The tree prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil but can tolerate alkaline conditions. It’s important to avoid waterlogged soils, as cherry trees are susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions. It requires minimal pruning, usually just to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Prune in summer after flowering to avoid issues like silver leaf disease, which is more likely if pruned in winter.
