Camellia japonica ‘Kasuga Yama’ is a beautiful cultivar of Japanese camellia, known for its elegant blooms and evergreen foliage. This variety is popular for its striking flowers and ability to thrive in the U.K.'s climate, offering year-round ornamental value.

1. Flowers

  • Form: Medium to large blooms with a formal double or semi-double structure, showcasing tightly arranged petals.
  • Color: Deep, vibrant red flowers with a velvety appearance, making them particularly striking against the glossy green foliage.
  • Blooming Season: Flowers in late winter to early spring, typically from February to April in the U.K.

2. Foliage

  • Leaves: Glossy, dark green, and leathery, providing a rich evergreen backdrop throughout the year.
  • Shape: Oval with finely serrated edges, characteristic of camellias.

3. Growth Habit

  • Size: Typically grows to 1.5–2.5 meters (5–8 feet) in height, with a spread of about 1.2–2 meters (4–6 feet), depending on conditions.
  • Form: Upright and bushy, making it suitable for hedges, borders, or as a standalone feature.

Planting and Growing Requirements

1. Preferred Conditions

  • Soil: Requires acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–6.5), rich in organic matter, moist, and well-drained.
    • For alkaline soils, use ericaceous compost or grow in containers.
  • Light: Thrives in partial shade. Avoid full sun, which can scorch leaves, and morning sun after frosts, which can damage flowers.
  • Shelter: Plant in a location protected from strong winds and late frosts to preserve flowers.

Common Uses

  1. Specimen Plant:
    • Excellent as a standalone feature in gardens or containers due to its showy flowers and evergreen foliage.
  2. Hedges and Screens:
    • Forms a dense, attractive hedge or screen, particularly in sheltered, shaded areas.
  3. Mixed Borders:
    • Combines well with other acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas, or pieris.
  4. Containers:
    • Perfect for patios or small gardens, especially in regions with less acidic soil.
