Fargesia Volcano or “red fountain” bamboo is a beautiful new non-invasive bamboo variety. It features stunning reddish-black canes and dense green foliage, reaching a height of up to 2 meters.
Consider investing in a soaker hose to help keep your plants well-watered without having to think about it, especially during hotter weather.
Where should I site my Fargesia?
Like many Fargesia, this adaptable bamboo tolerates a range of conditions. To grow fountain bamboo, plant it in fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-draining soil in sun or partial shade, and protect it from cold, drying winds. If growing in pots, remember to feed and water regularly, ensuring the soil retains moisture without becoming waterlogged.
Growth and pruning
Fargesia, commonly known as Chinese fountain bamboo, grows more slowly than Phyllostachys but forms denser clumps and remains dwarf, reaching around 2-3 meters in height. Ideal as a specimen plant, windbreak or exotic privacy screen.
Due to its slower growth rate compared to other bamboo varieties, this plant requires less frequent pruning. To keep your bamboo manageable and healthy, prune by removing weak, dead, or damaged canes down to ground level throughout the year, and clear debris from the base. Enhance the appearance of the canes by removing lower foliage, either by snapping off side branches or cutting them with secateurs. This improves airflow and promotes growth. In spring, it is normal for yellowing and dropping leaves to occur as new growth emerges, though some old leaves may remain attached, turning brown and papery.
