Eremophila – Emu Bush - The Resilient and Vibrant Aussie Native

Eremophila, also known as the "Emu Bush," is a group of hardy and attractive Australian native plants that thrive in a range of conditions, from dry, arid landscapes to coastal gardens. With their striking, tubular flowers in shades of purple, pink, red, and yellow, Eremophilas bring both vibrant colour and resilience to any garden. These hardy shrubs are known for their ability to withstand drought, poor soils, and extreme temperatures, making them an ideal choice for low-maintenance, water-wise gardens.

Eremophilas vary in size and shape, from compact, low-growing bushes to larger, more upright shrubs, offering versatility in garden design. Their long-lasting blooms and attractive foliage make them a perfect addition to native plant gardens, pollinator-friendly spaces, and even container gardens. Whether used as a focal point or part of a mixed border, Eremophila adds both beauty and function to the landscape.

Why Grow Eremophila?

  • Vibrant, Long-Lasting Flowers – Eremophilas produce striking tubular flowers in a range of colours, including purple, pink, red, and yellow, that add a vibrant pop to the garden and attract pollinators like birds and bees.
  • Drought Tolerant – These plants are incredibly drought-tolerant once established, making them perfect for water-wise gardens, xeriscaping, or low-maintenance landscapes.
  • Hardy & Resilient – Eremophilas can handle poor soils, extreme heat, and cold temperatures, making them ideal for challenging climates.
  • Wildlife-Friendly – The nectar-rich flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including birds, bees, and butterflies, supporting a healthy ecosystem in the garden.
  • Versatile Size & Shape – With species ranging from low-spreading ground covers to tall, upright shrubs, Eremophilas can be used in a variety of garden settings, from containers to hedges and borders.

How to Grow Eremophila

  • Position – Eremophila plants thrive in full sun, where their flowers can reach their full potential. While they can tolerate partial shade, they perform best in a sunny, well-exposed spot.
  • Soil – Prefers well-drained soil, ideally sandy, loamy, or rocky. Eremophilas are well-suited to poor, dry soils but do not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Adding a bit of organic matter can help in heavier soils but ensure good drainage.
  • Watering – Water regularly when newly planted to establish roots. Once established, Eremophilas are drought-tolerant and require little water, but they will benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
  • Fertilizing – Eremophilas do not require heavy feeding, but a light application of a slow-release, low-phosphorus fertilizer in spring can encourage healthy growth and more abundant flowering.
  • Pruning & Maintenance – Prune after flowering to remove spent blooms and shape the plant. Trim any dead or damaged branches throughout the year to maintain a tidy appearance. Regular pruning also helps encourage bushier growth.
  • Winter Care – While hardy in most regions, it is best to protect Eremophilas in areas with frost. A layer of mulch around the base in winter can help insulate the roots and protect the plant.

Perfect Plant Combinations Eremophila pairs wonderfully with other Australian natives, such as Grevillea, Callistemon, and Banksia, which share similar water and soil requirements. Its vibrant flowers also contrast beautifully with ornamental grasses like Pennisetum, Festuca, or Lomandra, adding texture and movement to the garden.

For a striking effect, combine Eremophila with drought-tolerant perennials like Sedum, Lavender, or Coneflower. It also works well in mixed borders alongside succulents like Agave or Aloe, where its colourful blooms create a dynamic contrast with the more sculptural forms of the succulents. In coastal gardens, Eremophilas pair well with salt-tolerant plants like Sea Lavender or Coastal Rosemary, creating a hardy and resilient landscape.
