Oleaster

Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Compacta’ – A Hardy, Evergreen Shrub with Silver-Leafed Beauty

Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Compacta’, commonly known as the Compact Oleaster, is a versatile, evergreen shrub valued for its attractive silvery foliage, fragrant flowers, and ability to thrive in a variety of conditions. This compact variety offers all the charm of its larger relatives but in a more manageable size, making it an excellent choice for small gardens, hedges, or as a specimen shrub. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves are coated with a silvery-grey sheen, creating a striking contrast against the bright yellow flowers that bloom in late autumn to early winter. Following the blooms, it produces small, edible fruits that attract wildlife, adding both ornamental beauty and ecological value.

Why Grow Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Compacta’?

  • Silvery Foliage – The narrow, silver-grey leaves of ‘Compacta’ give this shrub a unique and elegant look, adding a touch of silvery light to the garden. The foliage maintains its attractive colour throughout the year, ensuring year-round visual interest.

  • Fragrant Flowers – In late autumn to early winter, ‘Compacta’ produces small, fragrant yellow flowers that fill the garden with a sweet scent. These blooms, though modest in size, provide a delightful surprise in the cooler months when many other plants have stopped flowering.

  • Wildlife-Friendly – The flowers of ‘Compacta’ attract bees and other pollinators, while the small, reddish fruits that follow are a food source for birds. This makes it an excellent choice for a wildlife-friendly garden.

  • Compact & Versatile – ‘Compacta’ is a smaller variety of Elaeagnus, making it ideal for smaller gardens, patios, or as a neat, dense hedge. Its compact form ensures it remains manageable while still offering the benefits of a larger shrub, such as year-round interest and wildlife support.

Planting & Care Guide

  • Position: Elaeagnus ‘Compacta’ thrives in full sun to partial shade. It will produce the best foliage colour and flowers with plenty of sunlight but can tolerate some light shade, particularly in warmer climates. It is also tolerant of wind and coastal conditions, making it a great option for exposed or seaside gardens.

  • Soil: This shrub is highly adaptable and can grow in a variety of soil types, including both acidic and alkaline soils. It prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil, but it can tolerate poor or dry soils once established.

  • Watering: Water regularly during the first few months after planting to help the shrub establish a strong root system. Once established, Elaeagnus ‘Compacta’ is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering, though it will benefit from deep watering during particularly dry spells.

  • Maintenance:

    • Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring to remove any dead or damaged wood and to maintain a tidy, compact form. You can also shape the shrub or trim it to size, particularly if using it as a hedge or topiary. However, heavy pruning is not usually necessary.
    • Fertilising: Elaeagnus ‘Compacta’ is not particularly demanding in terms of soil fertility, but a balanced fertiliser applied in spring can encourage healthy growth, particularly if planted in poor soil.
    • Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the shrub to retain moisture, particularly during the first few years after planting. This also helps to keep the soil cool and prevent weeds.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Compacta’ pairs beautifully with a variety of plants, thanks to its versatile growth habit and silvery foliage. For a striking contrast, combine it with plants that feature dark or variegated foliage, such as purple-leaved Heuchera or dark green Boxwood, where the silver leaves will stand out beautifully. It also works well in hedges or mixed borders alongside other evergreen shrubs like Ilex or Buxus, offering a contrast of form and texture.

In a wildlife-friendly garden, plant it alongside nectar-rich flowers like Lavender, Rosemary, or Verbena to provide pollinators with a variety of food sources throughout the year. If you’re looking for a more naturalistic planting scheme, Elaeagnus ‘Compacta’ pairs wonderfully with ornamental grasses, such as Miscanthus or Festuca, for a soft, breezy effect.

Whether used as a low-maintenance hedge, a specimen shrub, or as part of a mixed border, Elaeagnus × ebbingei ‘Compacta’ is sure to add beauty, fragrance, and ecological value to your garden with its silvery foliage, fragrant flowers, and wildlife-friendly fruits.
