Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’ – A Compact, Long-Blooming Pollinator Magnet

Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’ is a standout perennial that brings vibrant color, aromatic foliage, and an easy-care nature to gardens. With its compact, mounded habit and abundant spikes of deep lavender-blue flowers, this catmint variety provides continuous blooms from late spring through early fall. The fragrant, silvery-green foliage adds texture and is highly resistant to deer and rabbits. Loved by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, ‘Purrsian Blue’ is perfect for brightening up borders, pathways, rock gardens, and containers.

Why Grow Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’?

  • Abundant, Vibrant Blue Flowers – Masses of rich lavender-blue flower spikes bloom from late spring to early fall, creating a long-lasting display.
  • Compact, Mounded Growth – A naturally tidy habit makes it ideal for edging pathways, front-of-border plantings, and container gardening.
  • Aromatic, Silvery-Green Foliage – The fragrant leaves deter deer and rabbits while adding a soft, textured contrast to the garden.
  • Drought-Tolerant & Low Maintenance – Once established, this perennial thrives in dry conditions and requires little care.
  • Pollinator-Friendly – Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it a great choice for wildlife gardens.

Where to Site Your Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’

Perfect for sunny borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and container plantings, ‘Purrsian Blue’ thrives in well-drained soil and full sun. It pairs beautifully with Roses, Salvia, Lavender, Echinacea, and Achillea, creating a colorful and drought-tolerant planting scheme. This variety is also excellent for softening garden edges and pathways, where its delicate blooms can spill gracefully over the sides.

How to Grow and Care for Your Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’

  • Soil – Prefers well-drained, average to sandy soil. Avoid overly rich or wet conditions.
  • Light – Thrives in full sun but can tolerate light shade. Best flowering occurs in sunnier spots.
  • Watering – Water regularly when newly planted. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and only needs occasional watering in extreme dry spells.

Maintenance:

  • Deadheading – Shear back spent blooms in midsummer to encourage a fresh flush of flowers.
  • Pruning – Cut back in early spring to promote new growth and maintain a compact shape.
  • Dividing – Every 3–4 years, divide clumps in spring to rejuvenate and promote vigorous growth.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Nepeta faassenii ‘Purrsian Blue’ pairs beautifully with other sun-loving perennials and ornamental grasses. Try it with Roses for a romantic cottage garden feel, or mix it with Echinacea, Coreopsis, and Sedum for a pollinator-friendly landscape. For a Mediterranean-inspired design, plant it alongside Lavender, Thyme, and Salvia. Whether used as a ground cover, border accent, or container plant, ‘Purrsian Blue’ is a low-maintenance and high-impact addition to your garden
